Where in the World is Washington, DC?

As I was signing up for another 1-year Avast license I was asked to declare my state of residence. The drop-down window choices included countries all over the world and for the USA it offered all 50 of the United States, along with at least one surprise. I had no idea that French Guiana was one of the United States, but according to Avast it is. This will no doubt come as a surprise to the people of French Guiana as well as to the people of the USA. It might even be a surprise to the people of France! But even more puzzling was the fact that my home state was not listed anywhere in the drop-down window. I live in Washington, DC, the capital of the USA, located right between the states of Maryland and Virginia – which Avast does provide as choices. But there’s no listing for Washington, DC. What’s up with that? I flipped a coin and picked Virginia as my home state, but that’s just not right.

;D >>> can’t help, you should submit a ticket on avast web site  you’re running the “free” version, okay, no big deal if your registration data isn’t completely accurate, where did you say you live again ??? yeah we’ve been told here that some of our territories were wrongly listed >>> our minister of foreign affairs is investigating

Virginia was a good choice.

See, if Virginia is good enough for George Washington, it’s gotta be good for everyone. :stuck_out_tongue:

The list is perfectly correct, Bill. Washington, D.C., is neither a state nor a place within a state, and there’s no reason it should appear in a list of states.

here ???

(or am I missing something?)

Washington (state) != Washington, D.C. (the city) ;D

@ scott: the state is a few thousand miles away from the District of Columbia, where the city is located

Oh, didn’t know that…never liked geography…sorry ;D

Well… there are states for the US… but for the other countries no… Am I wrong? Why are they only shown for the US?

D.C. the District of Columbia is not a State. It’s in Virginia. I know it’s an entity unto itself because it’s the seat of our Government, but it’s in the State, so I think you were right to check off Virginia. Welcome.

Since everyone has decided to turn this into a geography lesson, let me correct you. The only land that currently makes up Washington DC was donated by Maryland when the capital was formed. The other half of the it was donated by Virginia but was taken back at the onset of the Civil War. That’s why Washington DC is no longer a full diamond-shaped piece of geography & its boundary follows the line of the Potomac River which is the state bondaries for Virginia and Maryland.

As for this form, most online forms that require one to fill in a location within the US has the 50 states AND Washington, DC listed as a choice since you can be born in one of all 51 places. This follows the format of all US government forms.

Wow, thank you much!!

Thanks for the correction. I knew I should have looked it up. ;D

Hi all…

Technically, Washington D.C. sits on the other side of the Potomac river in Maryland. Congress gave Virginia all of D.C.'s territory on their side of the river back to the state in 1846. Please see here under the history section.
