This may sound stupid, but I have been looking around the user interface, right clicked the avast! icon, and I cannot find any option for remote assistance. My question is… where is it and what do I have to do to use it? Do I have to reinstall? Has it been removed? Using Avast Free on a Windows 7 machine.
And sure enough, it shows as you illustrated in your reply, thank you. Unfortunately, I only see remote assistance on my Windows XP machine, using Avast! Free 8.0.1483. On my Windows 7 machine, using Avast! Free 8.0.1489, the remote assistance isn’t there.
Could it be that I opted out of that feature at installation? If so, do I have to reinstall to get that feature? Is there a way to install that option without uninstalling and reinstalling?
It is present on my win7 netbook installation of avast 8.0.1489.
I’m not sure if this is a selectable item in a custom install, but if it is then it would also be available to install it using the control panel > programs and features > avast! - uninstall - Change, now select the option and OK your way back out.
Thank you sir! That did the trick. I am ashamed actually. As an experienced user since Windows 3.11, I was still looking for the option in the app and not using the control panel. Thank you for reminding me!!
EDIT: Not out of the woods yet. After trying to control my Windows 7 laptop with Avast! Free 8.0.1489 from my Windows XP desktop with Avast! Free 8.0.1483, the desktop Avast just froze up when I clicked connect. Sigh. I saw something about that here somewhere. Time for more research.
I’m really not familiar with remote connections, but I would have though there might be some issues trying to control a win7 OS (with UAC) from an XP system.
