I did use Avast Free version 4.8 for two year without any problem then decided to go to version 5.
Now this is hell ! No way to get damn thing updated.
The sole answer from Alwil is to reboot and update in “safe mode”. Comfortable isn’t it ?
Even uninstalling completely (in safe mode ::)) is not improving thing so I only have two option :
change to another tool
un-install version 5 and return to version 4.8
Considering this last option I would like to know where I could get this version ?
Any idea somebody ?
Go to filehippo dot com and in the search box enter “avast free”. That should bring up a screen showing the latest version, and down the right side you will see older versions including 4.8 versions.
I would ask why it can’t update, e.g. what errors, etc. ?
When you update there is a chance that your firewall would be blocking the new program modules.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
I suggest you uninstall avast 4,8 reboot remove registry keys with ccleaner and install avast 5 that usually be the best solution for now when updating from 4.8 to 5. but its up to you of course I only give you some tips how to get avast 5 installed.
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
After three new attempts to un-install/re-install version 5 with every possible method (including manually remove registry key a.s.o) I finally re-installed version 4.8 and everything works.
RE Bios time altered! bios battery may be dying as it will cause date and time to go innaccurate found on motherboard coin cell 3volt. Time and date needs to be correct for avast to work correctly with servers at avast!
Sorry for not being more specific.
BIOS was altered intentionally (no relation with battery). I did reset date/time manually but I can still have a look again.
Anyway, after un-instal, clearing everything and re-install and I do not consider this behaviour as standard.
Additionally, I can see that this is a new feature with this version which prevent me to use it. :
Oh, by the way, I am a project manager for a technical software and should I deliver such version and not bother at all about trouble that prevent user to update they would roll me in tar and feather. And they will be right !
