My OS is Millennium, My antivirus is Avast4.5 my firewall is Sygate Personal Firewall and my Spam filter is Secretmaker.I would like to ask which of the following applications I should allow when I Connect to the net since I am not completely sure what to dowith some of these. Thanks for any help.

Because you have to set your Internet options. In your Internet Explorer (not Windows Explorer), go to TOOLS, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings and uncheck USE PROXY SERVER… if it’s checked…
Ok my friend… let’s start from the bottom… reboot your PC first, then when you log back in, completely turn off your software firewall (Sygate in this case).
When your Sygate is disabled. Try to open Internet Explorer again. Post back what’s happening…
Well, I couldn’t possibly know what are all those settings set on your computer from here. Next step is very basic step, and it comes to checking your internet connection… do you even have a connection established ? Is there maybe some kind of technical difficulty on your Internet Service Provider’s side ?
Other thing that I don’t understand… how can you post in these forums if you claim that you don’t have internet connection ??? I’m affraid we don’t speak about the same things… please, explain a little bit better what’s exactly your problem, 'cause I can see you can use internet without any problems…
You say you can’t browse any sites, but you still are here… That is contradictionary. What exactly do you mean? Is your system clean from ALL malware? Are there any strange entries in the hosts file?

That’s not true, 'cause you are not using Windows Explorer to access these forums… you are using INTERNET Explorer.
Can you spot the difference ? Windows Explorer is NOT Internet browser. It’s not meant for browsing the internet.

Technical, he is trying to use Windows Explorer for browsing the internet. Even if you deny access for Windows Explorer that doesn’t mean that you have no access to internet.
INTERNET EXPLORER is for that purpose, not Windows Explorer…
Are you so sure that Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer aren’t related?
Open up Windows Explorer, in the address type in a URL. You’ll see that it takes you straight away to the page.
One of the main reasons that Internet Explorer is considered to be a vunerable browser (yes, yes I am a FF user, but I’m not here on an MS bashfest,) is because of the fact that IE is so intertwined with the operating system and windows explorer.
IE and Windows Explorer do the same job, just one is local and one isn’t, with varying tweaks to accompany those differences.
I solve this issue altogether by simply blocking IE and using FireFox for my browsing needs.
That’s not the issue. Since we are at this topic, you can also type your url directly into START/RUN prompt and it will take you straight to that site that url is pointing to.
The issue is… he said he is not able to browse the internet just because he blocked his Windows Explorer (file browser, again, it doesn’t matter the fact that you can use it as internet browser as well) in his firewall. OK, he said that, but he still is able to post in these forums ??? That means one thing… his internet connection is stil alive and available and he can browse the internet without any problems…
“Simply” blocking IE and using Firefox won’t give you any advantages in this case… especially when it comes to Windows update.
