Which Firewall will be suggested?

any free firewall for windows vista 64-bit edition?

As far I know, Comodo works on x64 systems.

Agnitum’s Outpost free version does, as the Pro version does and the free version is essentially the same but with fewer functions.

hi, if all you want is a firewall, take a look at privatefirewall.

The process monitor/hips is disabled on 64bit vista systems. hope this helps, tim

I think windows firewall is enough.

Hate to burst your bubble.

Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

Whilst the windows Vista firewall has outbound protection it is disabled by default - You could also enable the outbound protection of the Vista firewall, but it isn’t very friendly, is rule based and you have to create the rules. - Vista Firewall Control, http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html and this, http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/faq.html. Also check out this topic for some user friendly help for the Vista Firewall Control, Outbound protection, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30234.0.

I agree if you have a hardware firewall first.

If the system has adequate Layered Protection with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), Windows Defender or Microsoft Security Essentials and WinPatrol then a software firewall is redundant.

Review the excellent BestTechie interview with Bruce Harrison who is a developer at Malwarebytes:
http://www.besttechie.net/2008/08/20/malwarebytes-developer-interview <== software firewalls are discussed starting about 8 minutes into the first video

Both videos are excellent and well worth watching.

I agree with you about layered protection. That is why I currently have mbam pro run along with avast 5 beta.Once the final version of avast 5 is released,I might just run only avast in real time.I personally believe the behavior shield can replace mbam.

Same old story, a hardware firewall doesn’t provide outbound protection unless it specifically says so (the greatest majority don’t). So you are still vulnerable should your system get infected there is nothing to stop it connecting and all the associated risk that goes along with that.

Some people wear suspenders along with a belt on their pants as they are paranoid that their pants might fall down.

I’m using the latest Comodo on vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit. For windows 7 I ran in compatibility mode for Vista. Just watch closely what you chose to install. When It gets to a screen with Hot Surf Toolbar Ask Toolbar and something else UNCHECK all of them. I tried Outpost and didn’t like it.

same as mine. i didn’t install the hopsurf toolbar.

Outpost 09 Free on the R50 (spec below) has given me no problems at all. To save time I simply resorted to choosing auto learn mode every time, and everything seemed to fall into place without a worry. I’ve borrowed it out a couple of times, the kids were on it (both under 10 years old) and a couple of their programs on it when returned but no problems. I rang up a few times as the household are relatively computer illiterate, kids aside, and everyone was quite at home with the setup. Bit of a surprise really.

Tho’ came back with MSE had turned itself off. Turned back on and updated so all good.

I also have OA on a couple of computers, which I like a lot but I find OA a bit more work intensive.

Edit - I should add that the kids programs are loaded to the computer from disk, and then link to the internet site where they password in to their online accounts. They then find more than enough to keep them occupied. The mum is computer literate, so she has always bought the disks - like ScoobyDoo, SpongeBob, etc (they dont cost that much really) - and ensured the young ones are aware that safe practice is taking place.

Thanks Scott. Yes, Online Armor firewall.
I have the paid version on quite an important computer that I use for reception. Email, banking, licenses, documentation, online auctions, that kind of stuff. I find that the OA program does expect a lot from you and need to be dutiful, and also patient with it at times. Mostly the stuff I do involves trustworthy sites so that saves me time when it comes to setting precedents at the gateway. I dont have to go search a reference every time an unknown entity is knocking at the door to be allowed in or out of the computer.

I Installed the PC Tools yesterday on Windows 7 64 bit Vista 64 bit and XP 32 bit. All work fine. Matousec rates it higher than Comodo http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge/results.php
