Which is a good pop-up blocker ?

Anyone know a good pop-up blocker, preferably free if possible ? I used to rely on the one that comes with XP but Ive seen a change in the amount appearing recently…

Pop-up blocker tend to be browser specific (you don’t say what browser you use), so I don’t know of any that comes with XP. Firefox has a pop-up blocker that is fairly effective. Avant browser (IE Clone) also has its own pop-up blocker.

Oh sorry, Iam using IE7…

There is one in IE7 but if it isn’t up to the job, check out this google search, http://www.google.com/search?q=popup+blocker+ie7.

Opera’s pop up blocker works good ;D You can disable referrer logging with Opera.

There’s a link to Opera in my sig. below. Opera is the most secure browser & it’s fast! If you’re on dial-up internet, Opera is a must have.

He’s using IE7

Google Toolbar has a popup blocker for any browser.

Er. doesn’t IE 7 already have a popup blocker?

By now, most standalone popup blockers are dead. Sure the default ones in firefox, opera,ie can be bypassed, but it is generally good enough so few people are looking for one.

This quote below should answer your question, the OP is getting more pop-ups and is looking for an 'alternative option.

As far as I know, development of anti-popup technology has matured so they are all (whether it is the built in ones or toolbars etc) basically at the same level regardless of what you use.

More popup appearing could be due to

  1. Adware on computer

  2. Certain sites trying to bypass popup blockers using specific technology

(2) is fairly unlikely and is not widespread, but even if (2) , I doubt switching popup blockers will help since they are specifically designed to bypass conventional popup blockers (which is basically all of them).

Certain new style “popups” bypass conventional popup blockers using css/java.

Turning off java and javascript will block them.

Can the OP give an example of one of those unblockable popups?

It’s not free, but it is good, although I use Firefox or Opera: the only pop-ups I see are the ‘Have you got time to take part in our survey’ kind which are a) legit and b) not worth spending $30 not to see.
