So last week I set out to upgrade my sister’s Laptop’s IE7 to IE10.
I was immediately informed that I first needed to install SP1.
Okay, so no problem … I’ll just download Win7 SP1 and install it.
So yesterday I was all ready to download Win7 SP1. I pressed the Download Button only to be prompted with which of 10 choices I wanted to download. WHAT?
After looking the 10 choices over, I eliminated 2 because they said Windows 6.1.
I then eliminated 2 of the Windows 7 ones because the “X86” designation no doubt denoted 32-Bit and I wanted 64-Bit.
NOW … from the 4 remaining Windows 7 SP1 choices, I see that 2 of them have “AMD” and 2 have “IA.”
Would “AMD” be for AMD Processor … and “IA” for Intel Processor?
My sister’s Laptop has an Intel Core i5 Processor. So, would that eliminate the 2 choices with “AMD?”
If so, then from the remaining 2 “IA” choices … which is the correct Win7 SP1 for my sister’s Laptop with Intel Core i5 64-Bit?
What do the “FRE” and “CHK” designations in the filenames denote?
Which Win7 SP1 from the image in the attachment should I download?
I’d prefer to just slap in SP1 as quickly as possible since I so far haven’t had access to the Laptop for as much time as I’d like to.
I didn’t have any problems when I installed SP2 in my Windows Vista this way. Of course, in that case I wasn’t prompted with 10 choices from which to choose.
Another reason I want to know which is the correct Win7 SP1 is because the next time I have access to her Laptop might not be at her house where we’d have the luxury of High Speed Internet … but, rather here where I don’t have High Speed Internet.
IA64 is an all new architecture for 64 bit CPUs, promoted and developed by Intel and HP. This architecture is very powerful, designed for very high end servers. The CPU chips alone sell for around $3000 each, not including the motherboard and other peripherals.
X86-64 is a 64 bit CPU architecture promoted by AMD. This architecture is essentially an extension of the current 32 bit X86 CPU architecture (used in 386, 486, pentiums, and compatible CPUs.
A key difference between the two architectures is that IA64 contaions no legacy designs from the X86 architecture and will not be compatible with current programs you might use in Windows. X86-64 will run these programs just fine as it has full X86 compatibility.
Stay away from the IA one.
I think the FRE and CHK denote the language, French or Czech. Where are you located?
