Which is the Real Latest JRE Update?

So the latest JRE version on FileHippo is 8 build 11.

On August 9th, MajorGeeks has JRE 7 Update 67.

What the heck is going on? I would think the JRE 8 build 11 would be the absolute latest version with which to go.

The one on filehippo is a “build” and not a release candidate.

See this for the latest RC http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp (v7 update 67).

There is another kink in the ‘what is the latest version’ to look out for as Support has ended for XP on JAVA.

Why is Windows XP no longer supported?

As of April 8, 2014 Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP and therefore it is no longer an officially supported platform. Users may still continue to use Java 7 updates on Windows XP at their own risk, but we can no longer provide complete guarantees for Java on Windows XP, since the OS is no longer being updated by Microsoft. We strongly recommend that users upgrade to a newer version of Windows that is still supported by Microsoft in order to maintain a stable and secure environment.

So you can’t get JRE 8 for your XP system.

Actually, JRE 8 U11 is an official release for Windows above WinXP and will not install on older versions. JRE7 U67 is for WinXP and lower.

Ohhh, okay. Between all you guys’ answers, I THINK I made sense out of it. I guess then what I’ll have to do is keep the latest versions of both Java 7 Update xx and Java 8 Build xx in my Flash Drives to cover all my bases. It’s that I didn’t actually want it for my computer. My Windows XP computer doesn’t even have JRE in it from what I can see. And at this time I haven’t seen a need to install it. The only time I’ve messed around with JRE was with that other computer with Windows Vista that I used to have.

I only wanted it in my Flash Drive for just in case purposes, for when I happen to be checking out / helping someone out with their computer and it happens to have JRE in it and it appears to be outdated. It’s similar to how in my Flash Drives I also have Internet Explorer for XP, Vista and Windows 7. Likewise, I have the Service Packs for XP, Vista and Windows 7. Just trying to be prepared.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying, guys.

You’re welcome.

Even when you have the latest version of JAVA installed, it is still a large malware target. So JAVA on XP (I know this doesn’t effect you) would be even more of a risk given there is no JAVA support for XP beyond JRE 7 Update 67.

So the old advice is even more pertinent, unless you absolutely have to use JAVA (program or web site that needs it), then you should uninstall it.
