Which version of Microsoft Visual C++ is Avast using?

I presently have 14 different versions on this computer. One is screwing up, and may benefit from uninstall/reinstall.

Minimum requirement is Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package, but I believe it should also work with the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package.

Thanks for the version info. I uninstalled and re-installed the 2010 version you mentioned, but still get the same message.
I even tried rebooting, but that was no help.

The message goes on:
“For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.”

This is apparently directed at the developers (not me). I have no documentation for visual C++.

I don’t know what your OS is, 32 or 64bit as the version you install has to be correct.

If you haven’t got the 2008 SP1 version it might not hurt to try installing that.

  • MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

You need 2008 SP1 - this is the one:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update
Note this link there are 64bit versions there (IA64, x64) ensure you get the correct one for your OS (x86 32bit OS, x64 64bit OS)

The same would apply to the 2010 C++ version 32bit or 64bit installation.

I installed the 2008 version you mentioned, and I still get the error for the guest account.

I noticed something in the event.log file that could be a problem. It says:
“C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\Data is invalid.”

I do not see a file nor folder by that name.

One additional thing the error message says is:
“Press retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled.”
Again, this looks like it is directed at the program developer. I don’t know what a JIT is.

I don’t have a C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast[b]Data[/b] folder either. unless it is referring to C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\ and the Data is invalid.

I’m at a loss as to the issues with C++ it isn’t an area I’m experienced in.

You say you are getting this for the guest account, whilst avast has restrictions for the guest account, not being able to change settings, etc. I don’t believe this should be an issue if avast was installed from an account with admin privileges.

I did a search on “Press retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled.” and found a lot of hits http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?p=Press+retry+to+debug+the+application+-+JIT+must+be+enabled, I don’t know if this will give you any meaningful information to track down the problem.

Based on what was being said regarding the JIT comment I updated Java. No help.
I created a new account, hoping that it would work, then I would delete the Guest account.
The new account has the same problem. I am confident that if I gave the new account administrator priveleges,
but I am not about to do that.

I suspect it has something to do with Windows 7’s permissions and sharing can of worms, but I am at a loss
as to specifically what. If Avast or some other software vendor could come up with a product to replace
Windows version of permissions etc, it would be a real money maker. That feature has already used up too
many hours of my life. :frowning:

Sorry, you didn’t find anything, I’m at a loss (as an avast user) as to what else to suggest.

You have ‘the administrator’ account, if you tried that as a test, I wonder if that would resolve this permissions, share or assertion issue.

Hi, avast uses Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 only. Installing or uninstalling 2010 runtime shouldn’t affect avast in any way and 2010 is not “backwards compatible” in this respect - its of no use for avast.

Hi Lukor,
The OP has C++ 2008 SP1 installed, but is getting errors, listed on Reply #2, #6 and #8 a little suspicion about windows 7 permissions.

They are other concern, now that he has C++ 2008 SP1 installed - is his mention of having a guest account, as I don’t know how this impacts on avast and C++ ?

Regarding the version, I have the following installed:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.17
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.4148 (I Replaced this one recently)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.6161
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.17 (Listed again)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.6161 (Listed again)

That is how they are listed when I go to the uninstall screen.
There are also 2005 and 2010 versions listed.
I don’t see any reference to V1 OR V2. (Or SP1 or SP2)

I recently created an administrator account. Avast works OK in that account, and it works ok in my wife’s account since I made her account administrative.
