And you? Are you using it? ;D
An interesting report from the makers of SocketShield:
I went to their site, read up on socket shield etc. I decided to try their 15 day free trial download. I chose the “save to disk” option. I downloaded it, then when I clicked on open all heck started. I use Sunbelt Kerio P.F. I noticed that the firewall “logo shield” that resides in the lower right corner of the screen started to reproduce itself all along the bottom bar. I tried to use my mouse to shut down the pc and when getting ready to do that the shut down option disappeared. So, I reached over and manually shut the pc off.
I went ahead and restarted, and after booting up the K.P.F.W.logo only appeared just once in the lower part of the screen as usual. I checked add/remove programs and didn’t find socket shield had installed. Next I went to search, typed in the name of the program, let the pc find all of the enteries and then deleted them. Did another search and found nothing left of socket shield. Rebooted the pc, went ahead and restored it back 12 hours, ran another search, found nothing of Socket shield. Went into the registry and found nothing of it. I don’t believe I am going to try to download that program again. First time I have ever experienced quite that weird actions after downloading something to the desktop thence trying to open the program. You all can use your own judgement as to what you want to do, but I am staying away from this one. My pc seems to be functioning just fine, thank heavens and I don’t think it’s any worse for the wear so to speak. Just relating my experiences.
Wow Neal that sounds pretty nasty mate, poor intro to a new program
I have been using SS since 18th May, however I downloaded the .exe Beta and Installed from there.
The program does not give you an option on where it is installed.
Seemed to save my bacon once only since install.
I can’nt see myself paying for it now that its almost out of beta and their asking prices are
$19.95 Includes 1-Year of Updates
$39.90 Includes 2-Years of Updates and these seem to be Special intro offers $10 reduction on both
Hi folks,
Well good to know, steer away from it then. Nobody is waiting for a negative experience. I stay with System Safety Monitor then. Besides that one is still free, and doing a perfect job for me.
I honestly think this is another indication that it is actually better to have your windows installs on two separate partitions: one for the system, one from the programs you run on it. Much easier in restoring or going back to a complete system restore, if something gets out of hand.
Interactions of program code with the windows system code make that sometimes you are in for quite a surprise.
Neal thank you for the “hands off” on this one.
