why am I getting emails to reset my password on this forum?

I just received two emails from this forum saying:

This mail was sent because the ‘forgot password’ function has been applied to your account. To set a new password, click the following link:

When I follow the link given and try to set a new password, it gives me an error message: Invalid activation code

I haven’t been to this forum in awhile. Is someone trying to hack my account?

If you didn’t request a password change, then the email normally tells you not to respond, e.g. don’t try to change it.

I have no idea what your logon name is, but your Display name ‘Liz’ is pretty common, but there shouldn’t be duplicates. But I suspect it could be another Liz (something) using the incorrect user name and failing to get the password right. At that point they may ask for a password reset, which ends up at your email address.

I have this once when I didn’t request it, probably another David (something).

Thanks, David!

That makes sense and feels better than thinking someone was maliciously trying to hack my account (although what possible reason for on this site I don’t know)…except it seems they thought it was me who activated the ‘forgot password’ function, and then told me to reset it, but then it wouldn’t let me reset it. Confusing.

Anyway, I was able to log on with my old password, so I guess all is cool…even if I still don’t know about that question.

It isn’t that they thought it was you that activated it, it is a security measure that the forgot password is sent to the registered email address to prevent any possible attempt to gain access by an unauthorised person.

This appears to be more than just a mistake.
I just received the following:

I immediately signed out. I did not act on the request to change my password and have asked a Moderator to look into this matter.

Yes I have just got one also, seems more like a forum software hiccup.

Seems more like a prank.

My concern is, if this were just a mistake or a prank, why would the link sent to reset the password result in an error message? Something fishy here?

???

Pranking Mods would be the stupidest thing ever. Avast! isn’t stupid and would not do that

It’s always good to think things through before posting.

It is more likely to be a bot attempting to gain access to forum accounts.

It happens all the time.

The forum software is doing its job and warning you of the reset attempt.
