Right, on the 30th of January I received an email at one of my gmail addys, addressed to “Amanda (removed even though it was probably fake)” thanking me for becoming an Avast customer and talking about my “60 day free trial.” It gave the billing address in west virginia which I have also removed even though it’s now 8 in the mornng and i still haven’t gotten to sleep and by google earth’s estimation it looked like a dentist’s office group or storage warehouse or something
Today I got another email telling me that my “Trial period” was up in six days and I’d be automatically “upgraded” to a 1 year subscription if I didn’t click x link and submit x password and x order number and manually cancel it.
There are SEVERAL problems with this, starting with: my name isn’t Amanda Fuller, I live in Canada, and I didn’t order any trial period of any kind at any point. I also didn’t click the links, as I’m not a complete fucking idiot; so, is this just a scam or am I being really ineptly stalked by some chick from west virginia or what? I just assumed the first email was some phishing scam and ignored it, but the second one is somewhat more concerning.
Update: it gave no info as to what “my” method of payment was at all, in fact the first one had a lime that said 'IF you paid by credit card" so ikd if that makes it more or less likely to be a scam. Probably more. Did I mention I don’t use Avast?
I tried finding a contact or support spot on the Avast webpage but apparently they don’t have one of those, just a bunch of links about ~their products~ and how to install them or -gasp- report falsified versions of them! or I would have passed the email on to the fraud department, which I suppose they don’t actually have. It’s 7 in the fucking morning, I’ve been up all night and I’d like to be assured I’m not gonna somehow be billed for $50 worth of software I didn’t order. I can’t …actually imagine how, but god only knows at this point. Is there a legit contact address or someone who can clear this up, please?
-Thnx,
Not Amanda
