Why am I getting this Error Msg?

I keep getting the following error message whenever Avast tries to update.

"Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Not enough storage is available to process this command.

Total time: 32:30"

I’ve got plenty of available space on my HDD so, what does this mean?

I’m running WindowsMe on an older Dell Inspiron laptop.
