I have been using the free Avast antivirus since long. and it works great. I have had no problems whatsoever with it till now.
Recently, the registration expired. So, when i tried to register again, as i always do, it was not successful.
Also, then i came to know that there is now a newer version of the anti virus that won’t require registration at all.
However, when i tried to install it on my old desktop PC the following error shows.
Is it because of the SP2/SP3 thing?
Are there some methods by which i can still use it on my current set up or do i need to change my set up?

Now, all of sudden, i noticed that since yesterday Avast again started working. The registration info shown is attached.
Now, how can this be possible? As i have definitely not registered on that day. Also, once registered does it not remain registered for one year? ???

Registration is history, see: https://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus
Strange that you only got 90 days, though…

So, then how did that happen? It must be some virus that did it? ???
Also, i did not at all register at the time and date shown. This i remember distinctly. And as you have said, registration is not possible at all right now.

No virus, older versions do auto-register.

Ok. Thank you for that information. I was not aware that it can auto-register.
