Why am I still picking up viruses?

[Sorry if this is a repeat msg./ 1st post didn’t go up]

Why am I still picking up infections if I’ve had Avast running on my PC at least a year now? It updates automatically, so that can’t be the problem. How do I prevent this in the future?

Avast identified the virus as a trojan–JS Treffuc-A [Trj]. Anybody know anything about this virus?

Any help appreciated.

Hi

This infection was probably nipped in the bud by the avast shields: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=63807.0
When connection was aborted, the malware could not infect you. Realize the Internet is a dangerous place, with a reputable website being maliciously injected every 3.6 secs.
Thanks avast for securing you,

Thanks for your quick response.

This has happened a couple of times now, and when it’s happened, it’s always been on my wife’s account. I use Firefox for a browser, while she uses IE, so I’ve advised her to switch to Firefox simply because more viruses are written for Internet Explorer than are written for Firefox.

Let’s see if that helps. Again, thanks for your help!

check your computer for malware with malwarebytes that is a good complement to avast.

just a quick tip:)

I suggest:

  1. Clean your temporary files.
  2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
  3. Use MBAM (or SUPERantispyware or even Spyware Terminator) to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, it is better and safer to send the infected file(s) to quarantine (Chest), rather than simply deleting them.
  4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  5. Make a HijackThis log to post here or this analysis site. Or even submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  6. Clean your Hosts file (replacing it) with HostsMan tool.
  7. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
  8. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
  9. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.
