Why Avast Access the permission of MAPS in Android phone?

Hi i am using Xperia Live with walkma, I am facing a issue in Disabling the App MAPS, I am saying this because i installed Avast antivirus and also Anti theft,every thing works fine for me but i am unable to disable the MAPS app.

Why avast is using the permission to MAPS, can u please let me know

If the phone is stolen, GPS could be started and the phone located, so, the report will be a map with the location.
At least, this is why I think avast! use maps.

Well Maps aren’t mentioned in the permissions KB - http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=1252.

I can’t see how it would require Maps, as a user isn’t forced to have installed google maps, etc.

I think that the GPS is used to get the coordinates and these are sent to the owner.

Hi,

I will get back to this thread after the weekend. But I’m pretty sure avast! Mobile Security doesn’t use any maps permissions (not sure about avast! Anti-Theft).

Nope, Avast AT doesnt use Google Maps or any other maps app at all.

It uses the GPS/Wifi etc to locate the phone and than send a sms to the “friends” phonenumbers entered in AT.
This link contains the coordinates, if it has gpsdata and phone’saccuracy. Clicking the link will take you to Avasts website and there it will plot it on a Google Map.

OK, I just checked and:

AMS - doesn’t use any maps or GPS (location) permissions at all
AAT - uses GPS (location) permissions, doesn’t use any maps permissions

I updated my mobile to ICS 4.04 Version, in that We have a option to disable the Apps which are not using much and to free the RAM usage…

I Disabled some apps,but the only problem i am facing is in disabling the maps…
