Do you really think it’s too much? Are you comparing with any other antivirus?
How much RAM do you have? Which is your operational system?
Indeed, only the virus definitions will take that RAM…

It’s something wrong here, for me it hardly use 13 Mb with UI closed to the tray, see pic1 , and 18 Mb with UI opened, …pic2
This in isolation is not enough to even make a suggestion.
Which of the avast processes (avastUI.exe, avastSvc.exe, the main scanning engine) or is this a combined total ?
Where are you getting this information ?
If using Task Manager which value are you using, the VM Size is meant to be a better value.
It also depends on what you are doing at the time, the more activity, the more memory used ?
I’m using around 30MB whilst browsing, see image. In the greater scheme of things, 50MB isn’t much at all (especially for a security application) when I have "GB of RAM and that is what you have RAM for to be used. I have many programs/process that far exceed the two avast processes (see image2) and even that doesn’t really concern me with 2GB of RAM.
As you will see from the two images these figures fluctuate, depending on what you are doing and what else is running.
well im running win 7 home premium with 3gb of ram 2.1ghz. and i never knew that avast would use so less resources on ur machines. and no im not really comparing it with other avs
I’m not saying compare it with other AVs, just that 50MB really is minimal usage when compared to other applications on your system and for one as important as your security, 50MB out of 3GB is a drop in the ocean.
Open a few tabs and see RAM usage of any modern browser cross 50 mb. This is a truth about software development, software has to be written keeping the most prevailing hardware in mind.
Currently the rule of thumb says if it runs well on a netbook (atom, 1GB, Win7 Starter), it nails performance. And avast! runs very well on netbooks.
o i see thnx guys for the replying tips and motivation and btw at least avast does not impact on my system but avg uses up to more than 100mb of ram for its only one resident shield process
You’re welcome.
Can’t get mine to go above 15mb.
Windows 7 x64
That’s really weird.
My AIS won’t go over 18 Mb -all processes and services included, full install- on normal operations.
Really light for a complete security suite. Of course I’m not using virtualization ATM-

wow im surprised but if im not mistaken oni this program version of avast , 5.0.677 only uses this much resources on my comp but the previous versions of avast 5 use up only not more then 10 mb of ram but usually 3 mb+ for the service
