Why Nothing Happen on Click "Start avast! Antivirus?

I go to my taskbar (the area at bottom left corner, near the Clock) and right click on Avast i icon. Select “Start avast! Antivirus”. Nothing happen, no Avast Scanning window, nothing. Why?
Btw, when I installed Avast, I still have Norton Internet Security 2005. However I have removed Norton this morning. Does Norton Screw up my machine?

 Norton Antivirus is like an octopus; in addition to using
your “Add/Remove Programs” to remove ALL listings
( there were 3 when I uninstalled Norton ), it is a good
idea to use your computer’s “Search/Find” feature,
selecting “All files and folders” using the search “term”
“Norton” & “Symantec” and delete everything possible
it finds. I also used a SAFE Registry cleaner to remove
additional “listings” in the registry, then I installed
Avast; did you follow a similar “process” ?
The presence of any Norton “loose ends” could effect
the performance of any subsequent antivirus program .

I just used Add/Remove Program.
Man, that is a lot of manual work. Well, I guess I have to do that.

Manual Removal NAV 2004
Manual Removal NAV 2003 or earlier

Welcome to forums…
I had to remove NAV a long time ago…
Well, I survived untill now… I’m avast since then.
Read: Removing Norton

See How important is it to completely remove Norton? topic.

  1. Please, browse the Symantec website and download the specific uninstall tool for NAV. It will clean trash left behing by NAV (files, registry keys). You need this to proper working with avast.

  2. Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

  3. You can delete folders/files under either ‘Norton’ or ‘Symantec’ folder, the others under Liveupdate folders and ApplicationData…

  4. On Registry, well good Registry Cleaners could do some work.
But, for me, the only thing I would worry about is the VDD keys. You must have the following entry there:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMonVd.dll

Can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
