Hello, this is a 2nd PC, mostly used for email,
occasional web browsing (OK except for Flash animations, it’s too slow for that).
The PC is running Win2k, 256MB RAM. The CPU installed does not have the SSE instruction set.
I was wondering if Avast home will run - if it slows the machine down too much,
I would consider stopping the standard shield. At least I would have the other shields,
pattern updates and on demand scans.
Thanks for any info.
I think you should let the Standard Shield on Normal and use it.
You have few RAM, but what can you do?
I think the protection is necessary… you’ll regret without it.
Thanks very much for responding.
As you advise, I’ll give it a try and I leave the standard shield up as long as the general slowdown is not
intolerable. I’ve been running this box for 10 years without any real time virus protection at all -
just the occasional Bit Defender or Trend Micro on-demand scanner - and have never had a virus
get control of the machine.
I always though my relative risk was low, since I’m running Firefox under Windows 2000.
Although saying that, my 13 year old son has started using it too, so that probably multiplies my
exposure right there.
I’ll update the post when I see how Avast Home works on a K6 III+ CPU.
davexnet, safe browsing and safe habits (downloads, emails, etc.) could make the difference.
It’s not a computer to test software (install, etc.).
Kudos to Avast,
the product actually runs acceptably well on the Win2k box running @ 550MHz
on the AMD K6 3+.
I should have tried it sooner !
