Is the off topic section forgoten about…?

You can use this one if you like:
Kubecj, is there any schedule for getting back the IM feature?
This makes absolutely no sence…!
What was this link suppose to tell me…?
Tech is on holidays so I’ll throw in my $0.02 for him. I’m guessing he meant this thread

The Off Topic Forum and PM’s are two sore spots around here that just won’t go away. The two issues get co-mingled and show up in unusual places, like here

We’ve pretty much been ignored on the Off Topic and endlessly put off on PM’s. Hard to say which is worse - feigned ignorance of the problem or empty promises.

Eh? :
Regarding PMs: This will be fixed, don’t know when. Too much work on my todo list with higher priority. :-\
Regarding Offt: I’m not sure what is the official company’s position on this, but I am personally against re-opening.
I don’t understand why the off topic section was closed , What happened anyway and why even have it if it’s not going to be used…??
Well,I would guess the Off-topic section was closed because of too many conflicts. I would also guess that it is kept because there is much information in it related to computers in general and for the links to programs/software that is also helpful to those in need of this information.
But if we don’t reopen it, I’m afraid that the General section will become off-topic ??? :o
We can’t reopen or close anything. We can only sit and wait and hope something happens.
There are already many “Off-Topic” threads on here some of them had no place else to go since
the PM’s aren’t available. Others are here because this is after all a forum and no one discusses business

Hi bob3160,
I have to agree with kubecj that the off-topic went off for a good reason.
At times it went totally off-topic, and sometimes over the top(ic). Then we were hampered by some people that tried to damage the forum outright, trolls lying under the bridge waiting for a thread of discussion to ride their awful hobby horses again and again and again.
What I think is sorely missed 'though is the PM function, especially in trying to help a poor soul with some malware we can PM amongst ourselves to double-check the best possible solution without upsetting the victim at hand.
In that way sometimes we could achieve brilliant cleansing routines. The thing we are still good at, but with the PM function at hand you have some more extra power. A big shame some irresponsibles had to hamper it, so we had to do without it for such a long time. Maybe a filtered version is brought in by the mods, so all that is PM-ed is moderated before getting to the other member, or it is a service you can get when you are over a hundred postings in a certain topic, which established the fact that user is a serious guy or gal trusted to have earned his or her position here.

But isn’t that what moderators are for…? To remove offensive post’s…

Its 50% off topic already. And if this gets closed, then Home/Pro will become off topic. Then Viruses and Worms. Soon there will be nothing left, or nothing of any consequence.
The reason Off Topic exists in most forums is not because it serves a useful purpose on its own merits. Its because the purpose it serves is to keep the others on-topic.

Sure, but if the powers that be find the whole thing offensive …
You would think there would be a recognition that we’re all adults (even if we don’t always act it) - that we’ve all heard the language and seen the spam that they seem intent on protecting us from. Clearly if those things offend someone they should avoid the offensive forum or not activate PMs. Its as simple as that. But you give some people a little power and suddenly everyone must comply or “plonk”.
First, I’m surprised that you all haven’t recognized that you are being “baited” by Jason.b.c in this thread…

Though I have stated several times that I would like to see the Off Topic forum return, I’m not sure how this thread (or the several others like it) are helping the cause of getting the Off Topic forum reopened.

Gee, I wonder why?

I was tempted to point out all the good things that happened in the off-topic forum. All the friendships that where made but,
since it will only fall on deaf ears, why bother.
^,
Agreed. With the exception of a couple of rabble rousers that should have been “plonked”, the Off Topic forum was a lot of fun.
I still think that Mozilla’s got it right with the “After Dark” portion of their forum. You need at least 20 (?) posts to even know it’s there. It doesn’t show in the menu of forums unless you’re signed in, and have the 20+ posts. Pretty cool.
If I’m not wrong, most of the ramblers had more than 20 posts when they spammed Pavel with their feuds which started in offtopic forum.

You’re right. It’s been a long time, I forgot about the Pavel issue.
Point well made. I’ll let my comments in both posts on this thread stand on their own merit, but that will be it on this topic from me.
spammed Pavel???
