Win 10 upgrade, consistent IS Bad Pool Header crash

Hi

I’ve gone through a few attempts at upgrading my Win 7 Home system to Windows 10, both through online and downloaded options. Avast Internet Security was installed and running on Win 7. With each attempt, at various stages of the Win 10 upgrade, I’ve gotten a Bad Pool Header blue screen.

Before beginning the Win 10 upgrade, I removed my install of MBAM, but not IS.

After running the Win 10 upgrade a few more times, I was able to get to a Win 10 logon screen, reboot the computer in safe mode, and uninstall IS. After the uninstall, the computer booted to my desktop, and was running without problems.

After using the computer with the new Win 10 upgrade for a good while, without any errors or crashes, I downloaded and installed IS. At the end of the install, I got the Bad Pool Header blue screen. I rebooted the computer, and it got to the logon screen, then the Bad Pool Header blue screen. I rebooted again, and was able to log in, but after a few minutes, got the Bad Pool Header blue screen again.

After a safe mode reboot, and uninstall of IS, my computer booted and ran properly.

I’ve repeated this process a couple more times (use the computer for a while, no problems - install IS, Bad Pool Header blue screen - safe mode reboot and uninstall, will boot and run, no problems).

To resolve, I’ve gone through the steps in this forum post (re: cleaning and reinstalling), and still got the same error after performing all cleaning, rebooting, and re-installing steps:

After the clean/reinstall/blue screen, I again booted into safe mode, and uninstalled IS. The computer booted properly to my desktop, and as of now, is running with no problems.

I’ve not reinstalled MBAM, or made any significant changes since the Win 10 upgrade booted properly, except Windows Updates.

Looking for suggestions and next steps.

Thanks

  • Which version of AIS…?
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Hello,

I have been running Avast! Free for 3+ years on Windows 7, and it gave me absolutely no problems – I loved it! Recently got another laptop with Windows 8 (which I immediately upgraded to 10), and was about to download the free Avast! 2015 before I saw all the negative comments on https://blog.avast.com/2015/06/03/latest-versions-of-avast-compatible-with-windows-10/ . Currently at a loss as to what to do next because my system is now running on ONLY Windows Defender – and I’m very uncomfortable with that.

The blog post is from June.
Try the latest version (10.4.2233): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176600.0

  • Latest, as downloaded from link in referenced post
  • Only MBAM, which was uninstalled before attempting Win 10 upgrade for the first time
  • Avast was always on this computer from the start, only upgraded as newer versions were available
  1. Download Avast Internet Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I realise the blog was posted sometime ago, but what got me having second thoughts were the comments – some of which aren’t up to a week old.

Well, it’s up to you if you install it or not.

Hi, referenced in the forum link in my original post, I’ve performed these steps already (copied below from post), except the IS link I used is the online version. I wouldn’t think it would make a difference, as it should still be getting me the latest version.

Already performed steps (copied from forum post):

Avast Clean Un- & Re-Install

  1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition.
    Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
    Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

Here are the Avast installer links. Note: You need to be ONLINE during this install.
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_online.exe <---- I used this one
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_online.exe

…Now…
2. Uninstall Avast by Control Panel>Programs [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Run Avastclear in Normal Mode and allow it to Reboot PC into Safe Mode to complete the removal process.
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn’t) - reboot.
5. Be Sure To Check PC’s Device Manager…Control Panel>System Once Uninstall is Complete.
Make sure to show any hidden devices by selecting pull-down menu Device Manager>View>Show Hidden Devices
If there is anything related to Avast with a yellow triangle then uninstall it (highlight, right click) and reboot.
If you get an error just right-click & delete.
6. Install the Avast version you downloaded.
7. Reboot.

Hi, thanks for your help to this point. Please disregard, I am going to resolve this a different way.

Just so you know, Rejzor’s tool no longer works with the current versions of Avast and should not be used.

OK. You’re welcome.
