Win:32 trojan-gen....False Positive?

Hey all,
The Avast 4.7 home edition is telling me that my ‘r2finst.exe’ is infected with a virus or is a virus…this is a ram cashing utility for Win98 on an old pc I’m using.
I have put it in the ‘Chest’ for now, but is this just a false positive or what should I do now to “Check it out”
…I never had a virus before, what are the steps to verify ? as I have heard Avast and other scanners read some older programs and files as false positives.
The path is C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\r2finst.exe
thanks ahead for info.

To know if a file is a false positive, please submit it to JOTTI and let us know the result. If it is indeed a false positive, send it in a password protected zip to virus@avast.com

Please, mention in the body of the message why you think it is a false positive and the password used.

Thank you for your response,
As it were, before I understood the process, since it was an old program I rarely used…on a win98SE machine, I just removed the program and then deleted the file in the virus chest. I assume, after running another scan, since it did not show up, that is is gone? or removed? Is that the case?

Now that I understand the process of verification…I will go that route in future.
Thank you for explaining.

More info on this program - Ram2Free (Win98-version), can be found at
griffithdatasystems.com…however I got it at majorgeeks.com.

Thanks again, and I will try to be a little more patient in the future. ::slight_smile:

You could have waited a little… no need to worry about files in Chest. They’re safe there and you could wait, investigate more, receive a new virus database with corrections…

Sure… it seems you’ve sent the file to Chest deleting it from the computer.
