Avast seems to have issues with WIN64/Sirefef/A, Win64/Sirefef/AO and WIN32/malware/gen. It says it has confined them to the chest but about every 3 minutes the warnings pop up again. I have looked at forums and seen many fixes that all involve having a good understanding of computer jargon. That is not me. I know how to point and click and follow directions, but all of that techie stuff seems WAY over my head. Can anyone PLEASE help me? Patience must be a virtue of yours.
siref is a nasty rootkit…so if detection is correct (usually is, has been many of these lately) you need Essexboy on this
follow this guide and attach (not copy and paste) logs from malwarebytes / OTL / aswMBR

I have the patience of a saint ;D
Essexboy…so far, you are my hero!
Hope I did everything right up to this point!
OK here we go… At any stage where you are unsure , just stop and ask

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
- Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
- Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
- If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.
Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Scary! I pasted the fix and pushed the fix button. At first the icons disappeared and now the otl box is gone. All i am looking at is my screen saver. Is this what it is supposed to be doing?
read what Essexboy posted in red above
If the main OTL box has disappeared then reboot the computer please
It has been this way for about 45 minutes. Is that normal?
In that case reboot please and then proceed to combofix
Combofix stopped running. It said it couldn’t find a file and then froze on the screen.
OK could you delete that copy
Then press the globe under my avatar, that will take you to my skydrive. THERE you will find a file named Gotcha , download that to your desktop and run please
Whew…log attached ;D
Looks like this variant is changing, could you run a quick Avast scan now please… How is the computer behaving ?
So far, no more pop ups regarding sirefef or malware. I will run Avast now.
uh, I did mention the computer illiterate part, right? Variant changing means…?
Ah sorry, this malware changes the files used and how it affects the system very frequently. So each change is called a variant … As in Elgars variation on a theme ;D
The current one has been alive now for nearly two weeks so I guess it is due for a change
Thanks for the explanation! I actually get it…lol! Avast just finished running and found NO threats of any kind. Does that mean I am fixed?
Subject to no further problems
I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems
Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean
A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[]Click OK.
