Hello everyone. I recently got caught up in the Windows 7 frenzy and purchased the Home Premium Family Pack Upgrade (1 license for 3 home computers) from XP to 7.
Anyway, after the first install, I noticed the WAV sounds for Avast were not working. I blamed it on the upgrade process and possibly sound driver issues. After the second install, the same thing happened again. I went into the sound controls in the control panel and saw that none of the Avast sounds were applied. So, I went in and manually installed them. They worked fine until the next time I started up my computer. Win 7 for some reason will not apply the changes permanently.
Is anyone else having this problem? I searched this site before posting this question, but did not see any results. I’m sure it’s a Microsoft issue with the new OS, but I just want to check and see if other Avast users are experiencing the same thing.
I’m using Windows 7 beta2 and see the sounds in C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\sounds and in XP Pro C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast4\ENGLISH which has to be set for Windows 7 when updating from Vista.
The WAV files ARE in the Alwil folder, but Win 7 won’t use them. Like I said, I even manually set them up, but they won’t STAY after the computer is shut down and restarted, and Avast won’t load them automatically.
Guys, I’d say you’re confusing the original poster quite a bit - as I believe he has avast! 4.8, right?
The problem with Windows 7 is that the sounds are bound to a particular profile, or that the profiles change quite often, I’m not completely sure - but the truth is that the sounds are registered only in the profile that was active when avast! was installed, and they may disapper if that changes.
Bob and YoKenny were referring to avast! 5, currently in beta; the problem should be solved there, because avast! doesn’t register the sounds as system events, but simply handles them itself (so, they should always be played, independent of the current profile).

Sorry igor and Mickey Way I never looked at the section this was posted in but simply the question itself. :-[
In 4.8 you'll need to go to the sound settings in the control panel and you may have to point avast! sounds to the correct sound files folder and wave file.

I’ve also tried “repairing” Avast and deleting and reinstalling Avast. For some reason that I believe to be a Microsoft issue, it won’t work.
I think I’m just going to abandon Windows 7 altogether and reinstall XP. I can’t believe how awkward and convoluted this OS is. I’ve been working with computers as far back as Windows 3.1, and with each new version all the way through XP (except ME and Vista), there were new tasks to learn, but at least there was a level of user management and interface. Not Windows 7.
