"Win A Free Macbook"?

I just got a popup from Avast! Free telling me I could Win A Free Macbook. Is this from them or do I have some strange virus? Are they trying to sell something or what? Is it because I have the free version I am now going to be subjected to popups and sales pitches?

Or is this just a contest they are running…or something? Sorry, but I have never gotten any popups like this before from them.

Thanks

They aren’t trying to sell you anything, it is a promotion for the new version of avast! Free Antivirus for Mac.

I haven’t had the pop-up, but I can’t enter it anyway as I believe you have to have a facebook account to enter and I flatly refuse to sign-up to facebook.

This is Avast Facebook contest.

Our long-awaited avast! Free for Mac is here. To celebrate it, we offer a chance to win a fabulous MacBook Air®. If you don’t have Mac yet but would like to go to Mac Promo tab above. All you need to do is to: take a photo of yourself with an apple and submit it in our contest. Picture with the most votes wins – and of course you can invite your friends to vote for you.

Just registered to say: not cool. If avast starts showing ads I will switch to another antivirus.

is not an ad. it is an offer for u to win a free macbook (lucky draw u can call that, and it is useful info to me…well i am informed that i could win something worth $ from nothing - avast free)

there are ads in avast…but it is in a un-intrusive popup similar to this and it only happens once in about 3 months? maybe even less…not something i will make a fuss at all when i am having really gd free protection. (do u expect no advertisement in free products really…? it is a platform for them to promote their paid products)

besides, u can turn it off via avast gui → community → under community features (turn everything off by unchecking them)

Switching to another AV is good if you find a product that does a better job of protecting your system.
I personally haven’t found a replacement and have used avast! since 2003.
Switching because you saw an announcement which you can prevent by simply learning the settings,
doesn’t make any sense.

Some of our decisions in life don’t make any sense. Poor of us…

Eventually we all learn, there’s no substitute for the best.

Hope I never see it. I get Facebook shoved down my throat by friends, family, and over half the sites I visit (have no FB account and refuse to get one except under a fake name). Do not need it from my AV, even if it is for a giveaway. And I would rather not stop contributing to the community as a solution. Or turn off any other setting, really.

As I said "I haven’t had the pop-up, but I can’t enter it anyway as you have to have a facebook account to enter and I flatly refuse to sign-up to facebook.

Not that I would sell my soul to Apple by even getting a free mackbook air, as nice as it might be; I don’t like the apple school of litigation (in the face of competition) and all of its proprietary restrictive practices you are tied to. For me a macbook air for free is too high a price to pay.

I have a Facebook account and would happily accept an iPad if avast! wanted to send me one. ;D ;D ;D

(Sorry David)

Saw the tray popup just now. Sign up just to post an opinion on this. Can it be made to be not so suspicious? Because it looks like the scam ads at various websites. Maybe add in Avast contest or something…

No need to be sorry, I don’t envy after any apple product, the company turns me off big time in their restrictive practices.

same here ::slight_smile: but if i get a macbook i would sell it away for $ ;D

But I wouldn’t even signup for facebook in the off-chance of winning a macbook air so that I could even sell it.

+1 ;D

I don’t have a facebook account. I’m currently running Avast 6.0.1367 and I don’t have any community settings in the Avast gui to stop this pop-up, I just saw the pop-up and don’t like it. Why did I get it if facebook is required?

Sincerely, Libra

this is because avast is not able to check if u have facebook account or not. it just tells u about the macbook thingy (as an information given out to all avast users).

i am sure there is community settings in avast v6 (i used it previously). try searching again.

edit 1: here u go, http://techdows.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Disable-Avast-Market-in-Community-section.png

just follow the screenshot.

Unintrusive? When it shows up with Avast not ‘opened’ but while I’m browsing the shark filled tank called the internet? Geesh! What are they thinking? :o

Is your tip relevant to web browsers?

The Settings / Community / Community Features specifies that that setting applies to “… control which community features will be displayed in the Avast interface” (says nothing about affecting virus like pop-ups invading our browsing experiences when Avast is not opened).
