Win32 Adware-gen: "Can not Find File"

Hi,

Today I ran my first scan in a few months and Avast brought up one result; however, it seems that, for some reason, Avast can’t remove it.

Directly from the log:

File Name: C:\System Volume Information_restore{A80475B6-CF6D-…\A0138604.dll
Severity: High
Status: Threat:Win32:Adware-gen[Adw]
Action: Move to Chest
Result: Error: The system cannot find the file specified (2)

I ran the scan twice in quick succession without restarting, and the infected file name and error were the same for the results of both. I have a suspicion that it is a false positive since I haven’t had a virus in ages, but I figured I should be cautious and ask the more experienced community members whether or not it actually is.

Thank You

Try clearing your system restore points.

  1. Turn off System Restore

  2. Restart computer

  3. Turn on System Restore

  4. Create a new restore point

Thanks for the advice,

I deleted all my restore points in an attempt to be more thorough, restarted my computer, and ran another scan. Unfortunately, the same file is still corrupt according to Avast.

see if you can get the full read out of the file without the … in the middle, that shortens the address line
and what you look for is the letters RP with a number after them, such as with RP1, Rp2, and so on,

though may be a much higher number,
if you can get that RP number we can probably go in and delete manually

sens avast is finding a malware and cannot remove it try a boot scan and see if you can solve it from that.

another suggestion is to download and update and make a quick scan with malwarebytes antimalware if you have problems with malware.

let us know how it went or if you need more help.

good luck and welcome to the forum,.

I am having the same problem. I know where the file is located - in some document files. I’m afraid to go to the actual document because I don’t know what to do to manually delete or get the file to the virus chest. How do I do that? Can I eliminate all the document files within a folder rather than go to the actual document? I haven’t figured out which document it is within the folder.

I found my problem and thought I would share it in case others share their computer with others. I have Windows XP for Home and my 3 children all had portals for their personal use of the computer. The virus was in a user’s area and that area had a password to get in. That’s why Avast couldn’t move the file into the virus chest. When I went into that user’s area after getting their password and did a scan in there, I was able to isolate the infected file.

I hope this makes sense to others who are running into this error message.
