Hello all. I seem to be getting continually hit by what avast identifies as
Win32:Agent-AGZR I am also seeing the Win32:FakeDHL.
This is a windows Vista/Ultimate laptop. I am running home edition build
4.8.1351. I receive mail via a pop server. To be fair, Avast always shows an alarm and makes noise when an email comes in with this filth attached. However , my boot sector gets messed up and I have to run the repair option on the Vista install disk.
Is there ANY way I can avoid this boinking of my boot setup ?
It is most likely a link or something in the email leading to a fake AV/downloader.
I would also say that these emails are spam are they not, certainly unsolicited ?
(so your email address is on a list/s some where or someone you know is infected and they get your email from their address book)
If so you could probably use an anti-spam application to deal with the spam first before downloading the remainder of the non-spam email.
I use MailWasher Pro, although it is primarily for Spam it is also easy to deal with suspicious emails. There is a free version, but this only works with a single email account. The Pro version works with multiple accounts.
Ok thanks I will look into this. Strange thing is, avast complains about it and gives
me the option to delete the email and I always do. It still boinks me even after
I delete the filth. The pop server I get email from marks it as spam but I have no
option to delete it before it’s pulled from the pop server . This is the main issue I
have with Windows is this virus crud. Almost makes one want to switch to apple/linux. >:(
Hello rwilcher,
home edition 4.8.1356 is available, update. right click tray icon > updating > program update.
I find it strange if your pop3 server goes to the trouble of flagging it as spam it doesn’t also move it to a spam folder. So that it isn’t automatically downloaded and gets pinged by avast, or they could go a step further and scan it with an AV, though I doubt many would even pick this up.
The beauty of MailWasher is you first run mailwasher it flags the spam and you can add others if not flagged. Then you click the process mail button, it deletes the spam from your email server and calls your email program to download the remainder.
MailWasher doesn’t download the complete email to do its analysis, it only downloads the headers, a small part of the body, it doesn’t download images or attachments and it views what is downloaded in text only.
I grok your unease 8). As the pop server is a Linux machine using spamassasin.
I understand the heretical nature of this setup but I didn’t want to have to deal with
viruses etc on the database server, it runs Linux. I use it as a email/database
server via wireless. After running 8 years I have never had to mess with virus
issues except at the windows clients ;D. I will give Mailwasher a try on the client.

Thanks! I did the upgrade to 4.8.1356. Did not know it was out. Should one check
for updates regularly ? Silly me, I thought it did the updates automatically like it
does for the VPS.
Automatic update on page 37 in user guide

By default it automatic program update will not be enabled, right click avast! tray icon > program settings > update > set both virus database and program updates to automatic.(click on picture to enlarge.)
It isn’t recommended to have the Program Update on Auto, that is why the Default Option is Ask, so you get the Notification (pop-up) that a program update is available. The last thing that you want is a large auto update of the program whilst you are in the middle of something
