Hello,
I recently got this Brontok problem. I get a lot of notifications from avast with the message “Win32:Brontok-CE [Wrm]” happening in the C:\Users\Public folder.

Can you please help me?
I tried to run aswMBR.exe, but it stops right in the middle even after renaming (aswMBR.exe). See attachment.
When I tried to post this the first time the computer had a quick blue screen, then a reboot… (that never happened before)
Try to run it in safe mode.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

aswMBR.exe has the same problem when running in safe mode.

The logs. “021320…” is the log after the OTL fix session. The computer is running just fine now, I didn’t notice any changes…
Do you have the combofix log please It should be at C:\combofix.txt

None, I’d know of. I sometimes have problems with the touchpad, and then after a restart there’s no problem, this remains. (No idea if thats related.) I will try to fix it by reinstalling the driver…
I just checked the User/Public folder and avast doesnt find anything.

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems
Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean 
A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Remove ComboFix
[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the “x” and “/”)
then click OK

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.
We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.

[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[]Click OK.

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now the free avast doesn’t include a firewall right? Which (free) one can you recommend that has a good performance and works nicely with avast?

I think I have another infection. I followed the same log. aswMBR doesn’t go through, in the middle of the scan it stops, and I get a windows message that “it doesn’t work anymore”. Same thing happens if I start aswMBR in safe mode.
Can you please help me?
Your malwarebytes was not updated when you did the scan…
update and run a New quick scan… not necessary to attach log if nothing is detected

Avast said I have a trojan horse, and finds a lot of infected data in User/Public …
Will do mbam again after update.
