Hey all! This is Annie.
I’m in town for the holidays so Dad has me doing maintenance on his computer. He has gone from the Pro to Home edition.
Problem:
I ran a boot time scan and it found win32:ctx. I deleted it, but don’t know if that was the right thing to do.
Google brought me right here
Per instructions on the site, I turned off System Restore, scanned again, even ran a through scan (no archives, though), did another boot time scan (overkill, right?), turned on System Restore.
I have no idea where this thing came from or how Dad got it…
Do I need to do anything else?
Thanks for any advice!
What you have done should do it. I don’t believe there is anything else you have to do right now. Healthy here, hope you and yours are also healthy. “Merry Christmas” to you and yours. ;D
Everyone is healthy and I’m very grateful for it.
This will be our first Christmas without my Momma so there will be some sadness mixed in. But she is at peace and no longer in pain…and that is a gift in a way.
Thanks for your reply. Dad reads the forums on and off, but he is just not computer savvy. He has other talents, though! He does run the scans–AdAware, SpyBot, CCleaner, and scans with Avast!, of course.
He was kind of shocked to find this virus since it’s an old one and can’t figure out how he got infected.
Actually, neither can I (not that I know that much!)
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Annie
Annie, no idea of this pest… neither where it came from…
Yesterday, Sasha and I talked about your mother, how we miss her :-
Glad to know you’re round again. Hope your father computer is ok and avast working smoothly there.
If not, you know, just post
Yes I miss Donnah also. I can imagine that your family does miss her. But as you say she is not in pain and is WITH you guys all of the time. Take care and good to hear from you. Bye now…
Tech! Hello!! How good to see your name…
I want to let you know that your card is still taped above her computer, and will stay there.
Please say hello to Sasha for me, ok?
No, Avast! is still not working properly. The internet mail provider still has to be manually started. I’ve tried a repair while online, uninstall, the utility on the web site, and a reinstall. Nothing works. Dad has just gotten used to manually starting it.
We never did get it fixed even when Momma was alive. As long as it’s protecting us, then that’s fine.
I hope your family is well, Tech! Enjoy them…
Hope your Christmas is wonderful!
I’ll be in town for the next few weeks so I’ll be here reading the forums between decorating, etc. for the holidays
Sincerely,
Annie
It’s a shame this problem was never solved.
At least, why don’t you put an entry into startup items, a link for C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe
It should, at least, start the internet mail service at logon.
All the best for Christmas and New Year… yes we really miss our friend CoJo, but I remember exactly what she said to me in her last 2 e-mails (unbelievable long e-mails and I had no troubles reading them over and over again… some 15 times I guess). Everything she said to me, still rings in my head… she made me thing differently about certain things and I am so grateful for that. Even though we never met (what a loss, unbelievable) I still feel like I know her and like she is here. I told her, whenever I see a butterfly, I will always know it’s her. Although she said she would like to be a cat, I know she is a butterfly. That’s why I made that animation and dedicated it to our forum ladies… I haven’t forgot Donnah either as I stated over there:
Sasha, thank you for your kind words!
And I love the butterflies…I like to think of Momma zooming around, enjoying those fields of flowers, and watching over us.
Thank you! It was beautiful and touched my heart.
Foolish question, but could this virus have come through in an email? Or was it one of those so-called drive by ones?
I ask because I’d like to tell my Dad what to avoid so it won’t happen again.
Here you’ll find more info: http://www.avp.ch/avpve/newexe/win32/ctx.stm
See how the virus acts and appears, months after being infected…
I see that it could be spread by email attachments as well floppies, etc.
Thank you, Tech!
I do know that when Avast! found the virus, there was something about explorer.exe also
Do you recommend that I do anything else to make sure this virus is gone?
