Firstly can I say that I am a complete novice where PCs are concerned so if you can help can you provide it in idiots form or give me a link with step by step instructions.
A few days ago I asked Avast to carry out a full scan. It found Win32:Cycbot-ki (Trj) and placed it in quarantine. Thinking that Avast had dealt with the virus I closed my computer down. On starting it the following day I noticed that Avast and Zonealarm icons were not on the start up bar and a few others were missing. I tried to start them up but they have been switch off line and won’t restart, it looks like everything on my PC is locked down apart from my docs and my pics. I can run internet explorer but didn’t go online as I have not antivirus or firewall. I downloaded the latest Spybot software onto a memory stick via my laptop and tried to run it in safe mode on my pc but it won’t run. Have also tried to run malwarebytes, etc but they won’t start. I have disconnected my PC from the internet and am presently on a laptop and I’m at my wits end to know what to do. I have read through your forum and it seems like a few people are having similar problems but it all sounds too technical for me. I am so carefully to ensure that I don’t open attachment or look at links which come via email and only visit every day websites so how did I managed to get this when I am so cautious? I always update my antivirus, windows update and run zonealarm so I don’t know how this virus has entered my system? Is there a disc that can be inserted into my pc to run and clean it? I carry out internet banking so how can I be sure there is nothing running the background once it’s repaired? I am running windows 7 64 bit machine. Now wishing I could just shutdown my PC and forget about it but unfortunately that is not an option
Any help would be very much appreciated as I’m now one stressed out lady!
Thanks so much for your help. This has worked for me which believe me when I say I’m extatic about. I’ve carried out more Avast scans and the only issue seems to be that CAB archive is corrupted. Error code seems to be 42127. I’ve had a read through the forum and it appears that I can’t do anything about this. I’ve deleted all my IE temp files so hoping that will resolve the issue. Any idea how we get these viruses? Can it be from sites like Amazon, Facebook, etc? I’m pretty cautious with emails and internet and although I’ve had a couple of viruses, my PC has never been frozen and I’ve never been left feeling helpless.
Thanks again Scott, really appreciate your help here
Brilliant, glad that it worked, and glad to have helped.

This is avast letting you know that it can’t scan the file, since it appears corrupted. Not necessarily an issue.
Is the cab archive located in the temp files?

This issue with the Win32:Cycbot-ki detection was a false positive, so in effect, avast was wrong.
Infections can come from anywhere, so you do have to be on your guard. The idea of safe browsing only goes so far nowadays. Generally your av along with a suspicious nature when browsing will help :)
Thanks again Scott, really appreciate your help here :)
Kind Regards
Julie
Again, you’re welcome
Though, all I did was pass on a solution from another user in the same situation

Here I am copying you with the colour coding ;D Yes… I have deleted all my temp files in IE, don’t know if that will help but will scan again.

Yes but you pointed me in the right direction and made the effort which in my book is so important when someone is feeling stressed

It is better to use the Quote function built into the forum than colouring the text, not to mention pink isn’t a very good contrasting colour, see image and modified quote above.
