Win32:Delf-MZG false positive - what if you didn't have the chest option?

I am one of the unlucky users that got the false positive last night. I couldn’t believe how many warnings there were so I restarted the PC in Safe Mode and ran Avast again. It was late and kept asking to delete or quarantine the trojan files. Since I was running is SM the chest wasn’t available for quarantine. I got tired and selected Delete All and went to bed.

I did not choose wisely as many program executables were deleted! Now I have to leave town and won’t be able to try to recover those deleted files until I get back but am not happy.

I think I either need to run an Undelete recovery util or maybe use an XP recovery point if I have one.

Any advice?

you have spoken the possibilities already. btw, did you try a system restore? it might help.

For system files, you can do an XP repair that will restore lost XP files. Be sure and do a Windows Update afterwords.

How do I go about running XP repair? Or even system restore?

Hello bran34,

are you not able to login to your windows? if not try system restore in safe mode. else there are other things you can do without having to restore or repair but extracting the files from avast! chest.

how to restore a system to previous state, please see here :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

for repairing your xp you need to have windows xp installation disc. but first give system restoration a try. but as soon as you restore to the previous state, connect to internet and update your avast antivirus. then lets see other alternatives.
