win32:junkpoly & fraudo

i have recently been infected by the above viruses. Ihave most of my stuff back-uped, but not all of it. my question- since i have .exe files on my backup i dont want to connect it to my computer so it wont be infected. so:

  1. how do you recommend i backup?
  2. am i right to think that- .doc, .docx, .mp3, .flac and .avi are all safe to transfer (they do not carry the virus?)

Many thanks

I will scan your computer before you make the backup.

  1. I suggest a full computer on-line scanning:
    BitDefender
    ESET NOD32
    F-Secure

  2. Or read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  3. Avira

  4. Kaspersky

  5. BitDefender

  6. F-Secure

  7. Dr. Web

that’s another catch- since the virus struck, almost all sites regarding virus fighting can not be reached (i cant even get to this forum from my PC- this is not my computer), and no anti-virus can get updated…

all i really wanna do is backup these files- so are they safe with these viruses?

[forgot to add- need to backup .pdf as well]

I think your computer is affected with conficker that is why you are not able to reach the antivirus sites. get the rescue cds.

ok. i dont really know if that is better or worse :stuck_out_tongue: anyway, i’ll make a rescue CD [i can make them on a DVD right?]. i just hope they will work- my cd driver has beef f*cked, kinda good-day bad-day for a year…

BTW- my computer is bootable, if you recommended the CD because you though it wasn’t…

Yes you can burn them to a DVD.

ok, so i make the DVD. i still really need to know if its safe to than plug-in my mobile hard-disc and back up the file types i’ve listed above, and what i can do to protect the stuff already on the hard-disc.

BTW- Dr web running full scan on safe mode just found virut as well… how bad is that?

If you do the scan it will remove infected files on your hard disk and other files are not deleted. after rebooting update your operating system and the antivirus. then make sure that you check the portable hdd too…

sounds good. so i will let dr. web go through with his thing, than use the avira rescue cd i just made, reboot and re-check. i know exactly when i was infected (two days ago from a friends comp) and have not connected the portable HHD so that’ll be clean. will post updates.

many thanks (though i would still like to know how you guys would recommend backuping the above file types when with this problem)

Very bad. It’s a dangerous virus and it will infect the backup if you connect it to the infected computer.

Use another media to backup (maybe a DVD-R), but I would try to get clean before even thinking to connect the old hdd with your backup.

Junkpoly does the same as Virut, infecting files with the exe and scr extension. Ive read horror stories about people fighting this. I don’t think you will have much luck with any AV or rescue disc. I would very carefully back up the files you wanted to recover to dvd , and wipe the pc.You will save yourself a lot of time. I would not let your portable HD anywhere near your pc.

all great and fine, will do, but can i get an ok about the file types listed above (i’ve read rumurs that .mp3 might be a problem…) can i try and move out .doc, .docx, .mp3, .flac, .avi, pics…?

and one more little question- i have a virgin disc-on-key- would that be ok for backing up or would the virus latch on to parts of the software?
