Hi All,
Just inherited a laptop with Avast loaded and current,but Im getting a virus warning and it refers to the above heading.The virus warning is NOT being generated by avast.Any help please.

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
  • What was the filename and path where the virus was found?
  • Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.

Hi, Its an Acer Travel Mate 2410 using Windows XP + SP2,Avast 4.7 Home Edtion File Ver Number 000754-2,Widows Firewall, and Zone Alarm.

Unfortunately I cant replicate the original warning, but have tried to eradicate it by using Multi Virus Cleaner 2007.It was originally in the virus vault,but is no longer there???

Is this a resident antivirus? Are you using more than one antivirus at a time?

I am only using one antivirus,and Im not sure what you mean by resident antivirus

Resident is active in background, installed and running… Two antivirus will conflict each other…

So, what is generating it?

Thanks for your help. It is resident and the only AV on the system.The Icon on the task bar will only respond if I let it access the net.It tells me to click the icon to download the latest malware remover, apart from that I cant right click it for its properties or any thing else .Im not gamr to let it on the net as I may get more problems,or should i let it on to see what site it goes to.?

NO! Never click it… seems a Rogue program installed…
Install the free version of Rogue Remover (www.malwarebytes.org) and check which application is doing that…

OK did that, and it appears that winXP update.exe was the problem.I let the program delete the offeners and it appears to have got rid of the problem.Thanks for your help. I appreciate it :wink:

To be you’re clean, it will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware. Some users recommend SUPERantispyware, Spyware Terminator and/or a-squared (take care about false positives).
If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
