Win32:Malware-gen, Downloader-PKU, Etc...

Well, it looks like a rash of infections are hitting multiple people as of late, and I have just become one of them. I’ve tried everything, as usual. Even did 2 boot time scans in hopes of catching the virus before the system booted up. No avail. But thankfully I found this wonderful forum board. I hope you fine people can help.

As per the sticky, my logs are attached. Thanks everyone!

P.S. Guess I should have clarified a little more. This is the same nasty virus that has been infecting many people as of late. It is picked up by AVAST over and over again and no amount of virus scans/deletion will get rid of it.

Hi I see you already have Combofix on the desktop

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Wow. You all certainly work fast. Thank you so much for your assistance.

I use ComboFix in certain situations but only as a last resort and usually only with the guidance of experts such as yourself. I will run the fix now and update you with everything you have asked for. Again, thank you!

A wise move, as if it goes wrong I know how to recover the situation

Okay, so the fix has been completed. My laptop has been running for about 30 minutes with no Virus Alerts from Avast. Computer is running good so far. I am going to run it for a while longer and see what happens. Here are the logs you asked for.

Thank you so much for your assistance. I will keep you posted on what happens in the next few hours. I’ll also run a virus scan and see if anything comes up.

Looks good let me know if there are any additional problems, an Avast scan will pick up the files that we have quarantined…

Let me know when you are happy and I will tidy up

Well it’s been over 2 hours and no sign of the virus anywhere. I ran a scan using Malwarebytes and it did find three infections (but I believe you said that was to be expected). Here is the log of that scan. I have not deleted the infections yet as I wanted to await orders from you before doing anything. You have the con captain.

Yep they are the quarantined files

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the “x” and “/”) then click OK

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Misc%20screen%20shots/CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Go to control panel
[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

Keep safe

Thank you again for all of your help. I have removed ComboFix, cleaned OTL, undated Java and deleted all but the most recent restore point. I’m also reviewing the information on protecting your computer. I am usually very good at avoiding viruses. In fact, this is the first virus I’ve ever allowed onto my computer. I’m still not even sure how it happened, as I have done nothing out of the ordinary in the past week.

In any case, everything looks good so far. I’ll keep you posted. Until then, thank you again!

My pleasure ;D
