Win32:Malware-gen on brand new laptop

Was this on specific websites or at random ? I am thinking of an infected web page here

It was on a couple specific websites.

A bit off topic but I’ve spoken to Avast customer service because although my free trial was meant to last for 30 days it’s expired. I was told I have a misconfiguration problem with my operating system which is blocking Avast, that my performance is really low and I shouldn’t use any websites. It hasn’t been fixed by the technical department because I didn’t want to pay the £79 charge.

I’m tired and pissed off, I feel like this thing is about to crash on me and I’m gonna have a few hundred pounds worth of nothing on my hands soon…

They are talking a load of round spherical objects … That is a third party site, tell them to get lost

What problems are you having with Avast with regards to the trial ? Is your system date and time correct

My current thoughts are that the web page is infected, could you give me a link to one, but make it non-clickable e.g. hxxp

I registered for Avast premier on Sunday, it was meant to be a 30 day trial but it only gave me a couple days and has now expired. The laptop’s time/date was incorrect but not by more than a day and a half or so.

I got the contact for technical support from the main Avast website, the guy did the remote assistance thing and ran some diagnostics - it’s not legit? When he checked system performance it was in the low 30’s and he said it should be in the 80’s.

It is a third party site and all they should do is help with Avast problems and not push anything else. I am sure there are a plethora of errors in your system log, this is normal.

Prior to the premier trial had you run any other trial programme from Avast ? As I believe the trial period is cumulative so if you use 20 days on AIS then there would only be 10 left for premier

Not on this laptop…but possibly a while back on another one.

Hmm … OK what problems do you currently have ?

Not having pop up issues anymore, windows updates failed last night and got a message saying the changes were being reverted. Other than that nothing really, I’m just concerned something might be hiding somewhere…and that Mcshield initially said the flash drive was infected.

That was probably the initial report from MCShield before it checked out the autorun file

Which update failed ?

All these, the ones not specified as recommended are important updates.

Could you go to control panel > troubleshooting
Run the windows update troubleshooter, does that cure the problem ?
