I have folders on my USB stick that have turned into viruses, I can access the files on their which are fine but all the folders that i had important work in have now changed to shortcut folders and when i click on them avast pops up with malware detected and also a message pops up stating that windows cannot find the file. Is there a way I can get the my files back, I haven’t deleted any folders in case my work goes.
The files are not from my PC its from a laptop so my PC is fine but I dont know how to get these files back. It is an 8gb stick and when i check the properties it shows that it is nearly full so the files should still be on there but i cannot access them.
Have you run a full scan on that USB drive using Avast? If the folders are shown to be infected, try to do a Avast repair on them.
I would also recommend a full scan of the USB drive using MBAM free version. If you have WIN XP, I would hold off on this since appears current 1.6 ver. has problems with WIN XP.
This should fix your problem…
Please download MCShield to your desktop.
[*] Double-click MCShield-Setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
[*] Allow MCShieldUPD.exe to access the internet.
[*] If an update is found, it will download and install the latest update.
[*] Once MCShield has loaded (or manually start the MCShield. Right click on the blue round icon in system tray and click on Control Panel)
click on Defaults to load defaults settings.
Then put a checkmark in the checkbox for next options:
[0] Always show log file if malware has been faund
[0] Unhide files and folders on removable drivers
[*] click Save
[] Connect all of the USB storage devices to the PC, one at a time, and wait a couple of seconds for scaning.
[] Once it has finished, If malware has been faund it will produce a log report for you.
