Win32-Malware-gen

i’m new to the board, hi there everyone.

yesterday, avast alerted me to a Win32-Malware-gen in a rar it then proceeded to contain it. i ran avast again and the laptop came up clean. then i googled the name then and found you guys.

i’ve followed the instructions in the logs to assist in cleaning malware thread, and quick scanned the laptop with malwarebytes and it came up clean then i used ots.

i’ve attached the ots log, so i guess i’m just double-checking with you guys to confirm if my computer is actually clean, lol.

thanks!

There really shouldn’t be any need to go into a protracted cleaning on detection of a single infection unless you are experiencing other symptoms ?

What was the file name and location it was detected ?

OTS log is clean.

IObit uninstall, you have Malwarebytes.

it was an infected rar file. avast detected the virus as it was partway downloading and stopped the download and contained it.

just checking. thanks guys!

You’re welcome.

That is the whole point of the avast! Web Shield, it scans content before it arrives (is saved to your system), so the only option on detection is Abort Connection. That file download is dropped so it shouldn’t be on your system, hence no detection on your scan.

Even if this .rar should have been downloaded it wouldn’t present an immediate risk. Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.
