win32:mbroot-j problem

My nephews computer (winxp-sp3) systematically froze up after a few minutes of activity.
I took the box home to troubleshoot. I removed Norton Internet Security and installed Avast.
A quick scan then a thorough scan with Avast removed a good number of malwares, except win32:mbroot-j

Avast suggested a sheduled boot time scan after an immediate restart; I agreed to it, but a BSoD appeared right after

BCCode=10000050&BCP1=FFFFFFE9&BCP2=00000001&BCP3=8AA98037&BCP4=00000000&OSVer=5_1_2600&SP=3_0&Product=256_1

I had to re-boot and the boot time scan by Avast never materialized… I suspect the malware has something to do with the machine crashing at the right moment…

I started in safe mode, ran avast’s sched.exe /a:*.
Afterwards, Avast still showed the presence of win32:mbroot-j in mbr 0 …

Please help …

Please attach your logs.

Thank you Asyn:slight_smile:

I took a tortuous way to obtain those logs; so please bear with me … :-[

1_ First, I saw True Indian reply, so I ran ASWMBR (log aswmbr1.txt attached)

2_ Then, I saw Asyn reply, so I ran MBAM (log mbam-log-2012-05-24 (21-13-57).txt attached)

3_ Then, I ran OTL without checking “all users” (logs otl1.txt extras1.txt attached)

4_ Then, I re-ran OTL “all users” but forgetting to close Chrome (logs otl2.txt extras2.txt attached)

5_ re-ran OTL “all users”, all other apps closed (logs otl3.txt extras3.txt attached)

6_ finally ASWMBR (log aswmbr2.txt attached)

Thank you … thank you

PS: please find the other attachments in the next posts … thanks

Hi everyone …

I couldn’t help but notice that the computer runs smoothly after the avast scans and the mbam, otl, aswmbr scans of May 24.

I did some pruning, clean-up (far from finish yet … :o).

I just completed avast boot-scan (almost 6 hours) and found nothing, 0 infection, mbr clean (!) ???

I’m still waiting for your help in this matter though … -;{@ …

Thanks in advance …

wait until jeff gets to u…sorry for being late…essexby is on holidays thats the reason we are late here :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks True Indian:slight_smile:

It seems, your logs were missed somehow.
Trying to change this. Jeffce will (hopefully) continue.

Hi,

Sorry for any delay…I have been selling my house and work has been killing me LOL!!!

I have briefly looked over your OTL log and we do have some work to do. While I am looking that over more thoroughly please do the following…

Please download TDSSKiller.zip

[*]Extract it to your desktop
[*]Double click TDSSKiller.exe
[*]when the window opens, click on Change Parameters
[*]under ”Additional options”, put a check mark in the box next to “Detect TDLFS File System”
[*]click OK
[*]Press Start Scan

[*]Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
[*]Then click Continue > Reboot now

[*]Copy and paste the log in your next reply

[*]A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:)

Thanks Jeff:slight_smile: … don’t stress yourself too much .

Please find attached log …

Hi,

Good job…run a new scan with both aswMBR and TDSSKiller and attach the logs.

hi Jeff:slight_smile: … here are the logs .

Hi,

We are getting there…

Please download the following programmes to your desktop:

Dr Web Live CD

ImgBurn

Install IMGBurn

[]Double click Dr Web
[
]IMGBurn will open
[*]Burn the ISO to a cd

[]Reboot the infected computer with the CD in the drive
[
]Ensure that the first boot device is CD - If you are not sure about that then see this page for instructions
[*]As loading starts, a dialogue window will prompt you to choose between the standard and safe modes.

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Dr%20Web%20shots/livecdbootscreen.gif

[*]Use arrow keys to select DrWeb-LiveCD (Default)

[*]When the system is loaded, check the disks or folders you want to scan, and click on “Start”.

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Dr%20Web%20shots/livecdDriveselection.gif

[]The programme will now scan for and cure/delete any malware that it finds. Allow it to do so
[
]Once completed reboot to normal windows
[*]No log is produced so once in normal windows run a fresh OTL scan and let me know if the problems persist

Thanks Jeff:slight_smile:

Hi,

Ok let’s work with another tool we have. Please do the following…

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

[*]Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]As part of it’s process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it’s strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

[*]Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RCUpdate1.png

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer’s settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

thanx Jeff:slight_smile: … please find attached log

Hi Jeff.

I looked up Dr.Web-LiveCD manual … … I think I can handle the non-GUI advanced mode .

You tell me how I should do the scan (default settings or command line with actions parameters) and I will do it …

Hi,

Let’s continue with ComboFix.

[*]Please open Notepad (Start → Run → type notepad in the Open field → OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

[*]Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause “unpredictable results”.
[*]Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
[*]ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

thanks Jeff:slight_smile:
