Many thanks for your help, the dreaded avast red box warning seems to have disappeared and after a few hiccups when rebooting, all seems to be well.

Just a couple of things, in case I’ve screwed up.
Combofix gave dire warnings that avast antivirus and antispyware were still running, but I’d manually .
switched them off.
When rebooting there did appear to be a lot of black screen time (cursor still visible) before a lot of Windows updating profile attempts.
Your final bit about downloading rar file I wasn’t really clear on, but did it and all seems well.
Many thanks for all your help and here are the logs as requested.

Ok does everything work as expected now ?

Widows updates etc …

Hi essexboy, everything seems to be back to normal, if a little sluggish. That might just be the weight of windows updates it appears to be chugging through though!

OK lets remove my rubbish and give you back some space, it may also be worth running a defragment once you have all the updates done

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Go to control panel
[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

Keep safe

Hi again and thanks for all your hard work.

So far I haven’t done the clean out, things appear to be a little slow from time to time and if I leave the machine for any length of time, it doesn’t “wake up” as before and seems to go into a loop of doing nothing very much. When I switch it off/back on on the power button it boots up, but appears to do it quite slowly, goes black screen for a few seconds, goes on to the password screen, then the welcome screen, which it seems to spend a long time on, before moving to my “home” screen where again the icons on it are slow to appear. After this all appears to be fine!
Am I being paranoid and this will go when I carry out your clean up instructions?

Again, many thanks for your hep.

Run the cleanup, then do a disc defrag

Let me know if that helps … If not we will look at some ways to speed you up

Hi essexboy, did your clean-up and defrag and it all seems to be getting back to normal. BUT (paranoia creeping in again) a screen came up this morning saying something like “You may be victim of software counterfeiting”. Thinking that was a dodgey link, I went into updates and it confirmed laptop had already installed updates this morning (09:04) and I checked for others and it happily installed another 5 (10:22). Was that just a rogue link that got through or does the machine now think it has iffy software installed. (Can’t understand how microsoft would have installed the updates to a counterfeit copy).
Again, thanks for all your help.

Wait for essexboy to help you with this.

Reboot the computer and let me know if you get that again. Some malware does corrupt windows validation

Hi essexboy, after a couple of reboots, no reappearance of the counterfeit warning. Fingers crossed its fixed!

Windows probably revalidated itself, or the warning was a minor glitch

Hi essexboy, the only lasting effect now appears to be that the laptop doesn’t “wake up” properly after sleeping/hibernating. It does appear to be going through the motions, but so slowly, it’s not worth waiting for and a restart on the power button seems to do the trick. After the recent hassles, I think I can put up with that!

Sometimes a chkdisc run wil limprove the performance for sleep

Hi essexboy, did a chkdisc and while it appeared to be very thorough, doesn’t seem to have speeded up/changed the little laptop. Could it be that I’ve got conflicts now as well as avast, I have Ad-aware, ccleaner and Malwarebytes floating around in the system?

Your thoughts very much appreciated.

Uninstall Ad-aware as MBAM is an order of magnitude better

Plus Ad-aware does tend to take a lot of memory

Have you defragmented the drive ?

Hi, I’ll uninstall that and yes its been defragged.

OK let me know how it behaves on completion

Hi essexboy, I’ve let it run for a few days and I’m delighted to say all appears back to normal again.

Again, huge thanks for your fixes.
