A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix

]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

Thank you essexboy, wonderful job and excellent instructions!

No problems at all after several reboots and rescans with avast internet security and malwarebytes. A minor problem was that I goofily attempted to uninstall combofix twice (I don’t know why!), and the second time I got a BSOD. But the PC is OK now.

After manually looking around here and there, there are a couple of things:

  • there is one folder in the C root named “32788R22FWJFW”, which I believe contains some antivirus tool (ERUNT.3XE and other similarly named programs) I attempted to install and run before coming here: scanning tells no menace detected, I think I can delete it right now.
  • there is a program called “conhost(121).exe” in windows\system32, which I believe too has been left back during a virus removal attempt by some tool.

Yes you can delete those as they are just backups and will do no harm
