win32 trogen-gen vc and vb

Help, yesterday i was running avast as i had done a few days ago, my brother, unknown to me ran ad adware, the next thing teh avast siren went off and we had this trogan in about 200 files, they all start with c:systemvolumeinformation_restore {e2428e38-b8a4-48ed-9563fac66f28201}\rp255\a0077 then a differnt 4 numbers for each entry and either .vxd .exe or.dll file. is this anything to do with running them both at the same time or do i need to be really worried?
Also this ad adware which has never been used before found hundreds of files and keys that were an immediate threat even though i had just run spybot and trojan remover.

Also this ad adware which has never been used before found hundreds of files and keys that were an immediate threat even though i had just run spybot and trojan remover.

No scanner can be 100% perfect.

Anyway the thing to do is Disable system restore
Reboot your PC.
Run Spybot, Adaware and a boot time scan with avast (Open avast > menu (top left hand corner) >Boot time scan (make sure scan inside archives is on)).

Then post a hijackthis log here: http://members.home.nl/edeijl/download/hijackthis.exe

–lee

The stuff in the ‘c:systemvolumeinformation_restore’ area are files that have been previously deleted (probably) from the windows system folders and windows copies those type of deletions into the ‘c:systemvolumeinformation_restore’ restore points so you can restore mistakenly deleted system files. Many virus and malware files are copied into the system folders for this very reason and to make them more difficult to get rid of.

There should be no problem in running adaware and spybot S&D, provided you don’t do it at the same time.

Other than that follow what Lee has suggested.

i have scanned with adware, spybot and done a boot scan, with nothing showing. the filesthat i moved to chest i have kept there, some had last changes in 2001, we havent had the comp that long, should i delete them?i have tried to download hijack this but i just keep getting that it is not a win32 valid application

Did you disable System restore, boot and enable it again? If so, the restore points and the ‘infection’ will disapear.
It’s not bad running an avast scanning with archive option checked again, “not a win32 valid application” seems a trojan infection…

yes it was done with sytem disabled, today we got another virus so have done thr procedure again, is it safe to delete the items in avast chest, some of the files last had changes in 2001, we didnt have our comp then.
i have uninstalled and reinstalled hijack this, here is the log

Hi marieandgordon,

Make sure system restore is still disabled.

Open task manager (Alt + Ctrl + Delete) then click the processes tab at the top, then select and kill this process:

ALCXMNTR.EXE

Then use Hijackthis for these:

THESE ITEMS ARE EITHER HARMFULL OR A SECURITY RISK
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO FIX THEM :

O3 - Toolbar: HP View - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpdtlk02.dll

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT NEEDED TO LOAD
AT BOOTTIME FOR THE SYSTEM TO WORK PROPERLY :

O4 - HKLM..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [QuickTime Task] “C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe” -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

I highlighted one in bold above, this is because it is either SASSER.B or SASSER.C worm!!, this is not good as it creates a buffer overflow and instigates your computer to shut down. (usaly a box will pop up and give you 30 secs before shutting down your PC)

So delete the file:

C:\WINDOWSavserve2.exe

Then run a boot time scan with avast to make sure all viruses are gone.

Then update and Run Ad-Aware and Spybot and your Trojan remover.

Then from control panel uninstall anything to do coolwebsearch or SmileyCentral
Then run this program to make sure coolwebsearch is gone: http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Then clean your temp files, i suggest you use ccleaner for this as there is quite alot: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html

After this reboot your machine.

Then go to windows update and get SP2 (www.windowsupdate.com), don’t for get to re-visit windows update after installing SP2 so you can install any more security updates.

Then redo and repost your hijackthis log.

Lee are you using the beta version of Eddy’s HiLoA as a couple of the items listed as harmful/security rise are now listed as Legitimate.

David,

Lee are you using the beta version of Eddy's HiLoA as a couple of the items listed as harmful/security rise are now listed as Legitimate

Actuary, this time i just used the headings and analyzed it myself, and i stick by what i have suggested

O3 - Toolbar: HP View - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpdtlk02.dll

Is just a toolbar (unneeded)

Have you ever known coolwebsearch to be a good thing?

Just plain unneeded.

However I’m sure marieandgordon will keep them if you feels there needed.

Have a good day

Hi marieandgordon,

Your log looks fine to me, no nasty malware there, so your clean as far as i can tell

Only thing i can suggest now is to visit windows update and install SP2 (then update SP2 from windowsupdate), as this will help prevent infections in the future, however the proper cautions will still have to be taken when downloading/installing/running software on/from the internet.

Thanks…
On my comp it says that automatic updates are available but i didnt know what they were so i never did anything so i updated and sp2 was one one of the updates, so i presume that the original pragramme is installed and i just need to keep updaing!!!??

hope not have to speak to you again, no offence!
Marie
