so, avast showed up saying a virus was found.

malware name: Win32:trojan-gen
type:virus/worm
i’ve tried deleting, repairing, and moving this file to the chest. none of these actions work. how do i get rid of this virus???

Post the logs on your next reply in this thread. When I see it has been posted myself (or someone else reading this) will alert an expert (that happens to be Essexboy) to review the logs and offer any further advice/procedures indicated.
If your username is your email address, using it on a forum increases the chance that hotmail account will be spammed. Just a warning for the future. I don’t know if you can change a username after you’re registered at the forum. But lets get any virus issues sorted, first. Hotmails spam filter is fairly good.
