i just downloaded new wave (a kazaa* like program) recently and my avast has told me that C:\Program Files\New Wave\saap.exe was infected by the Win32:Trojan-gen. {Other} virus/worm or whatever it is. But i didn’t send it to the chest because i think it’s a malware or addware and not a virus. Because if i will send it to the chest new wave will not work and since it is not causing any damage to my system i just let it be but under careful monitoring of course. I’m still considering to use avast’s cleaner but i’m afraid it might delete the file and damage new wave.

am i right in assuming that it is a malware/addware because it’s part of a p2p software?

was it a good move not to put in the chest and just let it be there?

if i will send it to avast, will they be able to fix it and return send back the file to me?

the facts by the way:
my OS: windows XP Home no service pack (1 or 2)

my avast: avast 4.5 home with the latest updates.

my firewall: zonealarm v 3.7.202

i hope you guys will be able to help me out. ::slight_smile:

saap.exe is an advertising program by 180 Solutions. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author’s servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups. This program is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.

Avast it is detecting this correctly. No need to send it to anyone.

  1. Its never a good idea to simply leave something on your computer, because you don’t think it is doing any harm. How do you know what it is doing!! you don’t.

  2. Moving it to the chest whilst you investigate it is the safest option. Google check saap.exe and New Wave and see what comes up.

  3. avast won’t just throw it up for no reason and like Eddy I don’t think it is a false positive, but that can be checked at: Jotti - Multi engine on-line virus scanner www.virusscan.jotti.dhs.org if any other scanners here detect them it is less likely to be a false positive.

  4. If you send it to avast you may get confirmation that it is indeed a virus, I don’t but they would undertake to fix a trojan file and send it back. Trojan files are not repairable as they haven’t infected a file on your system.

If you would like another opinon jut do a simple google search for “saap.exe” (without quotes).

My Opionon:

I don’t think this is part of the P2P program itself, more likley a 3rd party spyware/adware installed with the P2P program. (Kazza and Bearshare are two other examples of P2P program that do this), you may also want to do a scan with a spyware program called “Ad-Aware”.

If you have used KaZaa or Morpheus upon installing them they attempt to download and install several adware/Trojans. It is perfectly safe to delete them or move to chest.

I havent used new wave but if you havent tried deleting the adware/trojan dont assume they are needed. Try moving them to chest or delete and see what happens.

Kazza will even attempt to download a trojan when u uninstall it.

Personally I recommended that you only use p2p programs like kazaa on another PC if you have one and keep your main PC clean.

thanks! you guys are the best.

i’ll go try out your advices now, keep you guys posted.

thanks a million loads again!! ;D
