These are classed as harmful or a security risk - However, if you installed this and know exactly what it does, your decision.

Follow up, a search of google for ViewMgr.exe, returns lots of hits and some of them feel this may be a form of spyware - http://ask-leo.com/viewmgrexe.html

Extract:

From what I've been able to gather, it's a component of something called "Viewpoint Media Player" that most people feel is some sort of spyware. That is apparently installed when you download and install recent versions of AOL Instant Messenger.

The consensus seems to be that you can uninstall Viewpoint Media Player. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, select it and hit remove. Apparently the uninstall is less than complete, however, and you’ll probably still need to go looking for the files - search for viewmgr.exe and delete it. (If you can’t, you may need to fire up Task Manager and kill it first.)

I’m a total beginner when it comes to computers and I have a problem that I can’t fix. After running avast antivirus it detected that i have a win32 trojan.gen virus. Can someone please tell me how to get rid of it. Also Word (XP 2002) is acting funny. When I reveal formatting it changes on its own. Any changes I make to my document are automatically deleted. Is this due to the virus?
Please help me someone!

Thanks.

Evot, you can follow the instructions at Eddy’s cleaning page: http://members.home.nl/edeijl/
If they’re too difficult, try ‘Cleaning’ in my signature…

  1. Run avast! scanning with archive option checked. Post the results.
  2. Try to run an antispyware scan (for instance, SpyBot or Ad-aware are too of this programs). You can find how to download them in ‘Link’ of my signature.

If you can’t follow this, well, try on-line scanning: here or here. Or, better, on http://www.security-ops.tk/]RejZor’s page.

Still getting Win32-Trogan infected files as reported by AVAST.

I thought this log would show that I have a clean system, but something is still

a miss.

Yep, me too.

Avast keeps giving te following message:
Avast Warning
C:\WINDOWS\dpe.dll is infected
WIN32:Trojan-gen {other}

When I send it to the chest it keeps up with the warning. Then a window comes up with "Cannot process “C:\WINDOWS\dpe.dll” File.

I have ran spybot and ad-aware, but ad-aware freezes when trying to quarantine the relevant files. Also done the hijack this scan and below is the log. Any advice would be appreciated as I have been at this on and off now for two days. The only way I can do this now & anything else that is small is with the Avast On-Protection turned off, and I gues this isn’t a good thing.

Celeron 2.6, Win XP Pro - SP1 only (not sure about SP2 and my video editing program), useing Mozilla, Zone Alarm. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

evot here,
could someone please tell me how to include my hijackthis.log?

Packy,
remove these:

Pongo81,
dpe.dll is a CoolWebSearch trojan. Please download and run CoolWebShredder: http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

You are using a old version of Hijackthis, please update first and then post another hijackthis log here.
Old version of Internet Explorer detected, please update.
Your Operating System is not up-to-date. (Latest service pack not installed)

evot,
Download it from: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip
Press “Do a system scan and save a logfile”
Copy/paste it here, IN A NEW THREAD!

This is not just for ‘Evot’ but all those who posted a hijackthis log without explaining the problem, this only hijacks the thread from the original thread creator ‘Packy’.

Please don’t simply post a hijackthis log with out first explaining what your problems is, have you searched the forums for a similar problem to yours

It doesn’t always help and swamps a thread, especially when there are numerous different higackthis logs. It make things confusing and difficult for people to help.

What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
What was the virus name, what was the filename, where was it found
example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?

Have you read this thread? - Advice & Tools for virus/trojan/malware Removal & Prevention

From your log file it would appear that you are running a number of Symantec programs, if any of them are resident scanners, it is possible that they may conflict with avast! What Symantec programs are you running? How/did you get rid of Norton Anti-virus?

If the file is in use or in certain hdd locations, windows protects from deletion or being moved.

Try scheduling a boot-time scan from within avast! This should be able to deal with it before it becomes active.

Advice & Tools for virus/trojan/malware Removal & Prevention

G’day Davidr

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have searched around different threads, forums etc and tried removing tools as well.

I have downloaded Hijackthis V1.97 and below is the log from that.
CWShredder tells me that coolwebsearch was not found on this system. V2.14 just downloaded from your link.
I don’t use IE so do I still need to update it.
As explained about the SP2 I am hearing conflicting reports on it compatability with the Pinnacle Studio video editing software I use. That is why I haven’t installed it. Is this critical?

Here is the latest log.

Not having SP2 will leave you a little more vulnerable, surely the software will have or can be patched for SP2? MS from april 12 will be trying to get you to install SP2, so you will have to avoid auto update in windowsupdate. I’m sure that they will also introduce other incentives (read obstructions) in the future to twist your arm into and SP2 update.

Have you scheduled and run a boot-time scan as I suggested?

Extract from Eddy’s log file analyser:

You are using a old version of Hijackthis, please update.
Old version of Internet Explorer detected, please update.
Your Operating System is not up-to-date. (Latest service pack not installed)
Software firewall detected.

GENERAL INFORMATION :

All items in the original HijackThis log file which are not shown here need further investigation.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT NEEDED TO LOAD AT BOOTTIME FOR THE SYSTEM TO WORK PROPERLY :

o4 - global startup: microsoft office.lnk = c:\program files\microsoft office\office\osa9.exe

Thanks DavidR,

Yes I did the boot-time scan - Avast actually asked if I wanted to.
Did that and moved the viruses found and restarted. On-Access Protection still finds the virus.
I will try fixing through hijack this now.

Cheers,

Where does it find the virus? example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
