I am far from a computer genius. I posted this note a minute ago and apparently did it incorrectly. I can’t find it. I’m trying one more time. I’ve gotten a virus/worm named Win32:Trojan-Gen. (Other) and I can’t
get rid of it. Avast stops it from getting in my computer but it pops up again every five minutes. The fixes I’ve found on other forums are WAY over my head and the fixes offered by retail companies I’m leery of. I’ve been ripped off before. They offer a free scan and find you have many horrid dangerous viruses that only their software can get rid of – for a nominal fee. I think they make up some of the viruses. Does anyone have a simple fix that even I can perform?
Have you tried a boot time scan with avast!?
Right click on the avast! blue ball in the notification area and select Start avast! anti-virus. Right click anywhere on the avast! scanner screen and select Schedule a boot time scan.
Have you updated to avast! 4.7 because it is better at removing viruses?
Have you tried these free and effective scanners:
Ewido (XP’Win2000 only) http://www.ewido.net/en/
and/or a-Squared http://www.emsisoft.com/en/
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/
Run them in safe mode for best result. (Tap F8 while rebooting.)
Unfortunately, Win32:Trojan-Gen. (Other) doesn’t tell us anything about the malware: if the problem persists, please make a note of the file name and location of the malware found.
Good luck!
Depending on if the file is in use or its location, windows might well be protecting it and a boot-time scan as Frank suggests should overcome these points.
What was the file name, where was it found
example (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx)?
On-line Virus Scanners and other useful Links Security-Ops.eu.tt, I don’t think you will find any disreputable companies on the list, it is the web site of one of our forum members RejZoR ;D
You can use an on-line scanner to confirm/double check a suspect file, established connection to the on-line scanner of your choice and just before you do the scan, pause Standard Shield, enable after completion.
Other useful confirmation multi-engine scanners:
Jotti - Multi engine on-line virus scanner if any other scanners here detect them it is less likely to be a false positive. You can’t do this with the file in the chest, you will need to move it out.
Or VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner
David and Frank, tank you very much for your responses and the time you took to make them. I’ve tried Adaware, Spybot and Ewido all in safe mode. No dice. I’m going to try the boot time scan as soon as I figure out what that is and the other sites suggested.
I’ll let you know.
Eric
As David and I have said, we can’t help you until you tell us the infected file name.
I've gotten a virus/worm named Win32:Trojan-Gen. (Other) and I can't get rid of it. Avast stops it from getting in my computer but it pops up again every five minutes. If this is a true statement, it may be Web Shield that is giving you the warning. And, if that is true, then the trojan is not on your computer but instead is being blocked from getting onto your computer.
Can you post a screenshot of the warning message?
