Deleted old content/questions due to Zero Help…Thanks anyway I guess? :
I had asked if a LOT of other programs suggested here to assist in identifying/removing this crap work in XP x64…since I Never…EVER see anywhere if those programs will run correctly in the x64 OS. I now know that Hijack-This DOES work in x64 OS…AND it had the option to close the culprit exe kernels64 in the SysWow64 folder. I removed it from there and from the Run section of the registry. I also found an executable in the Root directory that I know didn’t belong…LOL
I disabled restore points, unhid files/folders (to get to the admin_local settings_temp) and got rid of the junk. It’s all back to working fine again as far as I can see.
If it’s not too much to ask for…does anyone know if I can use the Drop My Rights (for internet browsing and emails) in the XP x64 OS, or is that only for XP?
Thanks for ANY help!
If the “DropMyRights” advocate “DavidR” does not post a
response here, perhaps you could send him a “Private
Message” !? You also should consider what the Editor of
Spyware Weekly Newsletter said in his Nov 23 '05 issue :
"A few people mentioned a similar program, also written by Microsoft programmers. This one does the exact opposite of DropMyRights. MakeMeAdmin lets you log in as a limited user, but launch certain programs with administrator rights. It is similar to the Windows “Run As” function. The difference is that this program gives administrator-level rights to your limited account just before launching a program.
Of the two programs, it probably is safer to use MakeMeAdmin while logged in as a limited user. That way you cannot accidently launch Internet Explorer or your email program with full rights. Both of these programs give you a very elegant way to avoid much of the risk associated with the internet. If you (or a family member) are constantly fighting a spyware infection, this may be the solution to the problem. "
I’m not familiar with the winXP 64bit OS, so I can’t say if DopmyRights would be compatible with XP 64. So on that score I would also say MakeMeAdmin may also fall into that same compatibility area.
THis is all it says on the web page for dropmyrights:
Further Detail
Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and later support functionality called Software Restriction Policy, also known as SAFER, which allows a user or software developer to run code at a lower privilege without having the user enter credential information when the application starts. For example, an administrator could run an application as a normal user by stripping out certain SIDs and privileges from the application’s token as the application is launched. Some applications, most notably Internet-facing applications, such as a Web browser, instant messaging, or e-mail client, should never be run under an administrative context.
So if it runs on win server 2003 which post dates XP 32 and the date on that web page is Nov 2004 perhaps there is some possibility it may work.
Thanks for your replies.
I was somehow led to believe that certain games require Admin authority, so I set my friend’s pc up that way. After that first attack…I tried setting up a user account, but I had to create a new admin-type account 1st?? When done…I lost everything I had already set up exactly the way I wanted it to appear and function (sans protection LOL). I just restored from backup and gave up. With all the advancements…things just get more complicated and that seems unacceptable. I can make/fix almost anything, but I have no desire to spend an unGodly amount of time learning how to become a computer specialist as well. That is why I look to those I consider Elites, who are so kind as to dumb-down the insane to something sane.
I have looked around a bit and can find no contact for further info on those program’s compatibility with the x64 OS. I found another option similar to DMR that uses “RunAs”. I would have to create a Guest account, which I hope won’t require losing anything from the current setup. Any thoughts on this? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1838170,00.asp
