Could anybody please tell me how to get rid of the above named virus that Avast says is in my memory, First of all, the only way I can get Avast to run is by going to Start, then All Programs, then right clicking on Avast then clicking run as, I have Avast 4.6 and everytime I try and move it to the chest, as recommended, I get the avast box on the screen saying The directory name is invalid cannot process c\windows\xpupdater.exe" file, if I try and delete the file it says Access is denied cannot process c\windows\xpupdater.exe" file, if I try and Move/Rename I get the box saying to restart the computer and let Avast scan all the data in the boot phase, I click yes and then a box appears saying, a required privilege is not held by the client program cannot reboot operating system. Can you please help me with this bloody problem as it is driving me CRAZY !!!
Run a boot time scan.
Hi Eddy,
You probably get sick of people like me, but how do I run a boot scan ?
Thanks
Start Avast > Menu > Schedule boot scan
Already checked the help file?
Things like this are explained there.
start > programs > Avast > help
Gday again Eddy,
Sorry to be a pain, but I cant get to the menu button, the avast icon that usually sits at the bottom of the screen and everything else that is usually there has disappeared since I got the virus ! I can only open avast from the start menu and the menu doesnt come up that way, Ive read the help section, but it doesnt tell me how to start it from there.
Try a repair of Avast first.
start > control panel > software > add/remove > Avast > change/delete > repair
Me again !!
Cant open add/remove !!! says I dont not have appropriate permission, this is the worst virus I have ever heard of !!!
Login as true administrator and see if you can do it from there.

I’ll try that, one more question for you, why is it that when I click on your webpage that I get a box on my screen saying that internet explorer needs to close ? I have tried about 4 times and everytime it says it has to close, is it the virus doing it ??? anything that I try, that I think may help me, it either doesnt let me go to the site or if I’m downloading something that I think may help, its as if someone is watching everything I’m doing and it cuts the server connection just before the download finishes ! >:(
My website is working fine.
It is very likely caused by your problems.
Probably because you’re infected. You should get clean as far as you can and only try to solve ‘other’ problems after that.
You should run antivirus and antispyware scannings. You could click ‘Cleaning’ in my signature for other info 8)
I suggest that you use firefox as your browser whilst you are trying to clean your system.
What is your OS and is it up to date, the same for IE?
Gday David,
My os is xp proffesional and should be up to date (automatically) and ie should also be up to date, do you think I should use a different internet program ?
another question, the avast boot scan automatically deleted the virus and file, I believe the file was xpupdater, how can I find out if it did delete the file, and how can I get the file back ??
When you’ve send it to Chest, both file and ‘virus’ were there.
Why do you want to restore the infected file? Anyway, start avast! antivirus, click on the Chest button and it will be on the infected files section.
it didnt give me a chance to do anything it just automatically deleted both the virus and the file, I was out having a smoke, when I came back in, it said it had deleted 2 viruses, I know they were in files cause the first time I ran the boot scan it said they were in files, but it wouldnt let me do anything with them.
Are you using the Home version? Did you set Silent Mode?
Otherwise, you should be using the Trial (Pro) version as the Home version cannot automatic handle viruses, it requires user interaction.
Other thing, are you talking about normal scanning or scanning at boot time?
boot time scan
Right now, avast! can’t send files to Chest under boot time. Only delete or move them.
Did you remember which option you’ve taken? I mean, if you choose delete, files are gone… You’ve deleted them.
You can search your HDD with any restoration application (see Links in my signature).
