Anyone have any suggestions?
Hi Darkstrike,
I have notified essexboy to help you.
He will be online later today.
Greetz, Red.
We will try a registry reset initially
Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Start FRST and press Fix
On completion try a normal boot
Thanks guys, I’ll try the registry reset in a bit…right now I am booting the machine into WinRE from a Win7 SP1 install disk and it’s sitting at “Searching for problems…Checking disk for errors” and has been for the last hour…should I let it keep going or would it be OK to stop it?
As an update, it’s still “Searching for problems…Checking disk for errors” - how long should one of these disk checks take?
Ok, decided to be impatient and cancelled Chkdsk (I had let chkdsk do it’s thing like this last night but shut it off after 2 hours as nothing seemed to be happening and I had to go to bed - didn’t seem to be doing anything this time either).
Just did your fix with FRST, then tried a normal boot - gets to the “Starting Windows” logo and sits there for a long time, then loads to a black screen, no cursor, and that’s it.
Tried in Safe Mode with and without networking and it still only got as far as aswrvrt.sys before it froze up and went no further…
Was chkdsk finding errors ?
Do you have two disc drives in this computer ?
It’s a laptop - one HDD and a DVD-RW drive. The HDD has multiple partitions though. There were no comments about chkdsk finding errors, all it said was “Searching for problems…Checking disk for errors” and never changed beyond that other than the little progress bar sliding it’s way across. Should I try disabling Avast somehow?
This will disable Avast and its drivers
Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Start FRST and press Fix
On completion try a normal boot
OK, booted into WinRE and ran your fix to disable Avast, tried a normal boot - same response as before, gets to the “Starting Windows” logo and sits there for a long time, then loads to a black screen, no cursor, and that’s it.
Tried a boot into Safe Mode and Safe Mode with networking and it gets to CLASSPNP.sys and then hangs there…
Any suggestions?
Unfortunately that confirms it is a windows error
Could you go to the BIOS and change the HDD to IDE or SATA (depending on what it is now)
Just tried that a moment ago, didn’t make a difference.
Booted into the Windows install’s on WinRE environment (i.e. not one off an install disk) and am currently running a chkdsk /r - at least this way I can see how far along it is and whether it hangs or not for sure compared to the “Startup Repair” chkdsk it was doing earlier.
Will report back what chkdsk finds - if chkdsk fixes any errors, I’ll try a system restore from an earlier restore point and see if that makes a difference…
