Win7 stops boot, turns off PC at aswardisk.sys

My completely stable Win7 desktop just began shutting off as the splash screen starts. I’ve tried booting from a Win 7 CD (no luck), and starting in safe mode. As files are loaded in safe mode, booting ceases at aswardisk.sys, then the PC shuts off. This file is an Avast file, and I would appreciate some help in resolving this problem.

Booting to BIOS works, and the PC can sit forever on the BIOS screen w/o shutting off. It’s only booting to windows that the problem occurs.

This might help get to the bottom of the problem,
Submitting a support file using the Avast Support Tool: https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB33

The PC is unable to boot in any way. A support file can’t be created.

One thought is to pull the HDD, set it up on another PC as an external drive, and delete the offending file. Any thoughts on whether that might work?

That may not be the offending file. That might be the last file that was OK. Can’t get into safe mode and do a restore?

That’s true. Nope, safe mode hangs for a few seconds at the Avast file, then the PC shuts down. Power off, no BSD, no messages. Same when booting from Win7 CD. May need to reinstall Win7.

No image backup? Without a way to get onto the system a reinstall may be needed. Might want to wait to see if anyone else chimes in.
