Window XP SP2 Final Release

G’day all,

Microsoft has release the final version of Window XP SP2 compatible for Home and Pro OS platform, what I like to know for you people have already got the final version of SP2.

I have already download the 279mb file from Microsoft website, before I format my HD to do a complete clean Window XP Pro install with the SP2. Has anyone done a FULL Testing of the SP2 final release, question is. Is everything okay and very stable no crash out or hang ups or what every problem may show up.

Please advise with your full SP2 report on what you think and what other problem have you seen on the SP2 Final release, BEFORE I kill my HD goodbye for reformat.

Thanks

Hey SpeedyPC,
It’s radicalb21. I have been running it since last week. I haven’t had any problems. A couple of quick questions what firewall are you using or will you be using windwos firewall. The total size for a full network install is 266 MB’s. Also take a look at this link:

I hope this helps.

G’day Radicalb21,

I won’t be using the XP firewall, I am going to my Zone Alarm Pro v5.1.011.000 which I never has any problem once so ever with my XP Pro SP1a. And still using my Avast Home version which I love as always.

Hey SpeedyPC,
Have you thought about doing a slip-stream or just load SP1 or SP1A and then loaded Service Pack 2.

Radicalb21,

I prefer to do a clean install without SP1 and SP1a, understand what you mean but I choose not to sometime SP2 can cause conflict problem with SP1 and 1a ya never know.

I choose not to used the Window XP Firewall with SP2, why? Well according MS SP2 report say the Window firewall doesn’t block or monitoring the outbound traffic it can ony do the inbound traffic. That is why I am still using my latest ZA Pro version.

SP2 still has many issues. imho MS shouldn’t have released it yet.

Eddy,

Can you please tell me what kind of problems does MS has many issue???

Personally I am going to wait about 2 months or so after SP2 has been officially released. If a person has the proper protection using XP and sp1 then I don’t believe it’s a dire necessity to jump right in and get sp2. Why not wait a while and let the bugs become known, fixed, and or any issues be taken care of before downloading sp2? ???

I too am in no rush to make the jump to SP2. I tend to dip my toe in the water rather than jump in with both feet to test the depth. I will be waiting at least a month before I try to find a source of an SP2 network install CD in the UK. There is no way I’m trying to download 266MB over a dial-up connection.

Yes I believe that there are many improvements in SP2, a lot of them are to protect the innocent/computer novice, who don’t know what steps to take to protect their systems. That is why many of the default settings in the new Security Centre (center for the USA readers) will help protect the novice user and help slow/stop the spread of infection.

I see your reading the same newsletters as me Bob, Fred is one of three sources that recommend hanging back until the dust settles.

Sorry about that David.
At least it shows we received our education from the same sources.
Fred, Scott and Chris among others are good people.

Lol, Mr Fred L. is also where I read his opinion about waiting. Looks like all 3 of us read the same material

SpeedyPC,

heres a link to an article about the latest upgrade, if you follow the links on there you’ll go to Micro$ofts site where there is a list of 200 programmes known to have issues, one of which is Zonealarm.

Think the general opinion is wait a few months.

Incidentally, quite a few of the programmes that are incompatible with SP2 are Micro$ofts own!!

companies like IBM are holding off from deploying SP2 despite the considerable security improvements it offers
That should say enough about sp2 ;D

I’ve tried sp2 on several systems with different configurations and I am not gonna put sp2 on the systems I sell.

Well said!

Must admit, it’s mildy amusing how many programmes are MS own

Please note, the version they mention is an old version. The current version is not listed. :)

I know, just posted as a “heads up” knowing the problems SP1 caused initially.

I’m not against anyone updating (might even do it myself later) I just think it’s best to make an informed choice and be aware of any possible problems.

Personally, I think this update is more of a “knee jerk reaction” to the recent bad press about Windows security, rather than a well thought out update. Possibly the ad men wanted a face saving gesture first, hence some of the problems with Microsofts own programmes after the update.

Hasten to add, that the above is merely a personal opinion not a “knock” against Microsoft. I’ll keep those for when I’m logged into Mandrake 10 and the forums I use there!

Already several exploits are discovered in SP2. You can read more about it HERE

Hi Eddy
That didn’t take long. It hasen’t even been officially released. MS better jump on this one but in a hurry.
